A couple of weeks later
The French Quarter
"So, you're leaving - again?" Kol said to Rebekah.
"I got things to do. Caroline has offered me this teaching gig. And I'm doing it."
"This not for real?! You - teaching?" Kol looked at his sister shaking his head a bit.
"It is. You don't need me here. Your will manage things. The witch will help you."
"Oh, really - what about Elijah?"
"What about Elijah?"
"Rebekah - I know that you are hurting and - this place reminds you of Marcel - and they could not bring him back- I know that you are in need of distance to - grieve - but Elijah needs us now. Don't be selfish."
"Cutting into her brother's sentence, Rebekah blazed,"Selfish-me? Who left this family when the going got tough!"
"I had to help Davina - my wife! She is fanily, too - or did you forget that?"
"No - but - ah, nevermind. I am not running away, as you so subtly are pointing out. We will try to get Hope back."
Star took a step forward to Elijah. The vampire looked both young and old at the same time. Dark brown eyes, filled with obvious pain and hidden trauma glistened in the tiny haze of light that radiated off the last rays of the slipping sun.
"What is it that you want?" Elijah turned to the witch, his voice composed, but his whole demeanour obviously not calm.
"I came to - apologise" Star said.
"Yes. No one gave you the choice - and I so know about not having a choice."
Star took a deep breath. Sympathy, goodwill, compassion traspired through her sparkling green eyes, but the Original blocked its stare.
"You realize that all this does not make me any less of a monster?!"
"Maybe - but - in your eyes - I can see your humanity, the person you really are. There are times it gets lost, when you wear that suit, when you become the man you created - the facade. But I saw it in your eyes that night. I saw the love that burns there too, the sort that goes for an eternity. You are good, Elijah."
"No, I am a wretched monster. Do not presume you know me." But I will do your bidding. What chouce do I have anyway. If you would excuse me, I have a job to do."
The vampire turned away, disappearing in the dusk, leaving the witch with a pierced soul.
The witch flashed back to the last entry of her diary,
"Let me hear that redemption song and I will be as the sweetest of jazz on spring breeze, my soul gently spreading into the natural world as such soft air does."
A week earlier
"Elijah fought hard for Nik's redemption." Rebekah said to Star, "and he thinks that he had actually failed. And - he thinks he failed all of us. And yet all his choices, like the one to erase all of his memories of us, of the 'Always&Forever', which inadvertently led him to - though it was not him who killed Hayley - still- all of it pains him deeply. He feels that this was all his fault. And yet - it what ours - we could not let him be - free from us. From 'Always&Forever'. We dragged him back in. When I had the chance I should have killed Antoinette, but I didn't."
"And you think that this would have changed anything?" the witch asked.
"Maybe not. But then again - he wouldn't have stopped Klaus, and he would have saved Hayley. Hope would still have her mother and not turn to the dark side." the blonde Original said.
"Hope turning to - as you say, the dark side was prophesized. That is why the witches wanted to kill her." Star said.
It seems this will be another drabble-like story.
