There was a weird noise in my head. It was a loud beeping sound. It was a regular noise and although there was something calming about the frequency of it, the actual noise itself was really irritating.
I opened my eyes but all I could see were blurred things. I could see a bright light above me and it made me feel dizzy so I closed my eyes again.
I liked the place in my head. It was dark at first but then Angelo was there with my little baby. It was a boy and he was smiling at me. Arcanxo was there too and he looked wise as always, a small smile formed on his thin lips and his eyes closed behind his glasses. Angelo would hold out his hand and we would dance together. Sometimes we would laugh, sometimes we would cry but I knew he loved me. He always held me tight to him. This was where I was meant to be.
"And they have settled in fine... They are coming later actually. They really miss you, we all do. I just want my friend back." I heard a voice say from far away. A could feel that my right hand was warmer than my left. I think someone was holding it. It made me feel good. I felt tired again though so I went back to my place.
"Oh Grace. We miss you so much! There's so much I want to tell you, you can't leave us right now. This is where things get more interesting!" I heard two people crying far away. Why didn't they just sit next to me? I couldn't move to go over there! I don't know why though, I just couldn't move. I couldn't even feel my legs. Were my legs even still there? They felt heavy and I wanted to sleep again.
"Hello Grace, you're looking a little better. Got a bit of colour to your cheeks now. We are all worried sick about you still. You know, I really admire you Grace. You've been alone through the pregnancy and you've dealt with everything so well. You were born to be a mother. Angelo would be proud."
At his name, I opened my eyes and moved my hand to push my hair out of my face.
"Grace, you awake?" The voice said.
I tried to say yes but it just came out as an inaudible noise.
I heard the door open and some more people came in.
"Grace, if you're awake, please squeeze my finger."
I started to panic. They couldn't tell if I was awake or not, I was a bit unsure of where I was and I couldn't speak. I quickly squeezed the finger and then there was a lot of commotion.
I woke up again and opened my eyes. Things were blurred for a few minutes but then it all started to come into focus. I was lying on a hospital bed and there was a curtain drawn around me. Next to me was a table and it had a vase of flowers on top and a few cards; one from my sisters, one from Ryan, one from Hannah and one from Darla, the lady who owned the fruit and veg store. There was a small metal chair to the right of my bed and 3 more comfy looking chairs to my left. I was by the window and had a view filled with boring block buildings.
I suddenly realised that I was incredibly hungry and thirsty. I pressed the buzzer beside me and only a few moments later, a nurse and a doctor were pulling back the curtain. They smiled in what I assumed to be relief when they saw me sitting up in bed. The nurse came and propped up my pillows.
"Is there anything you need?" She asked politely.
I nodded. "I'm really hungry and thirsty." I was shocked when it came out as a hoarse whisper. It didn't hurt to talk but the voice made me sound like a really old person.
The nurse beamed at the doctor and then down at me. "That's great news! Means you're getting better quicker than we thought!".
I smiled as she hurried off to get me some food and the Doctor came to sit on the metal chair beside me.
