Emily turned out the lights and pulled the dirty brown cotton curtain that was hanging on an iron rod loosely before throwing herself in the bed victoriously.
The moonlight entered in their gloomy room through a small hole or window, in name only. Two creaky wooden beds, one broken wardrobe, one induction plate and a toilet with fluctuating water supply connection were their major problems.
"Ruby, come here. We have a lot many things to discuss before we sleep away." Emily grew excited as she patted on her bed briskly.
Ruby was going to jump on her bed with an eager approval but rather toppled over something and then collapsed on the floor.
"Ouch. What was that?" A low guttural noise filled the silence of the room.
"Ruby! You must have accidentally stumbled over the steel water catch tray -- see up there, water is leaking from the roof again." Emily sat on her bed, stretching her muscles as she helped Ruby to come upon her bed.
The exciting part was bashed straightaway as despondency ran over Ruby's face. "What do you want to know, huh? I hate my life, this tray and more importantly this stinky room!"
Emily bit her lower lip and pulled Ruby into a hug. And a few seconds later, Ruby was a crying mess. "Emily, I want to know why they brought me in this world when they were to abandon me-- without even showing their faces to me they disappeared from this world."
Leaving behind the sign of their sin-that was Ruby.
For all these years, Ruby had buried this dark side under a facade of a happy-go-lucky image, who had been laughing by herself and making others laugh too by cracking silly jokes. "I'm a girl, Emily, deprived of parental love and the basic necessities. I can't speak softly to people cause I've never gone through such an environment. People find me as a mannerless and rude brat, how should I explain them? I've to be bold and strong enough to fight against the cruelties."
Emily caressed Ruby's head, dropping kisses over her head occasionally. "People are earning respect by physically dominating people with aggression and violence, that's destructive. And, the rich section of the society will never make attempts to get deeper into it."
