It was late July now, meaning Mike and El had been dating for a few weeks now, and everything was going great. More than great, actually. Mike has wanted to take El out on their first "official" date ever since their relationship was official. Of course they had been on many already, but those were simply unintentional and more of hanging out than a real date. At least that's what Mike and El were trying to convince themselves.

Mike had to figure out a way to ask her, though he knew she'd say yes no matter what he did. He had somewhat of an idea of what they were going to do, but knowing them they'd probably go off and do their own thing. They made their own rules.

Before asking her, he wanted to know what not to do, and what to do, so why not ask the person that knew her like the back of their hand?

The next morning at the diner was slow, no one was in a rush and that's how the trio liked it. Mike was helping Dustin out in the kitchen while El took care of everything in the front as usual. While Mike and Dustin were making some orders Mke finally brought the subject of a date up.

"You're gonna take her on a date? But haven't you gone on like... 5 already?" Dustin asked, confused. "Those don't really count.. but yeah, like our first official date as a couple!" Mike explained. "Gotcha. What are you two doing?"

"Well you know how much she likes to dance and I saw this flyer downtown the other day and El mentioned she wanted to go to it. There's supposed to be like this summer dance thingy..? I'm not sure but she said she really wanted to go to it, so bingo."

"Oh she'll like that. Especially if she can dress up and look all pretty for you." Dustin chuckled, remembering the middle school dances she would force him into, she looked like a dream while Dustin had on a simple t-shirt and jeans. She would do anything to be able to show off her collection of dresses.

"So when are you asking her, it's obviously got to be sometime today?" Dustin asked, plucking a fry off of a finished order's plate and putting it in his mouth.

"Probably on our lunch break." Mike said as he placed a plate of food on the counter so El could serve it. "Oh, Okay. Good to know, so you just going to flat out ask her?" Dustin asks, eating another fry.

"I mean... that's what I was planning. Do you think I should do something else? Like a bigger gesture or-"

"Mike, c'mon you've done this before. She won't care how you ask her, just do it how you would before you were dating." Dustin snorted at Mike's ridiculousness. "Yeah I guess you are right. I'll think of something. Thanks."

Time passed and eventually their lunch break came, like usual Dustin made burgers and fries for the three of them, El made some milkshakes and Mike cleaned off the empty tables.

Dustin brought the food out to their usual table and sat down, a few minutes later El set their milkshakes on the table and waited for Mike to join them at the table.

After Mike threw the rag in the sink he went over to the corner seat and sat down next to El, who immediately scooted closer to him and put her head on his shoulder. "Oh! I forgot to tell you guys, the other day when you guys were out, there was this couple that looked exactly like you. I actually thought they were you for a while but they weren't. It was crazy." Dustin said as he took a big bite out of his burger.
