The injuries weren’t very serious. I would be having bad headaches though. The doctors prescribed me some pain killers and told me to rest in my bedroom for a while. I really hate to miss the short program.
Brian brought me to my hotel room. I stopped him right at my door. “I can go in by myself,” I told him. “You sure?” he said with concern. I gave him a nod. “Alright. I’ll have Tracy come by to check on you later,” he told me. “Okay,” I said and walked into my room.
Yuzuru came to my side of the room. “Daijoubu?” he asked me with concern. I gave him a nod.
“No real bad head injury,” I reassured him. I laid down on the bed and placed ice packs on my left knee, left side of my head, left elbow, and my left hand. I closed my eyes and tried to endure the remaining pain. The pain killers were taking effect very slowly. Yuzuru sat on the bed and held my right hand. “Hontoni Gomen,” he apologized again. I looked at him.
“It’s alright Yuzu. It’s not your fault. The floor was a bit slippery,” I admitted to him. I closed my eyes again and thought about the flashbacks. I was sure that they were memories of us together. My first meeting and skating with Yuzuru. I felt happy in a way.
Yuzuru got off the bed and walked to the door. “How is she?” I heard a familiar voice asked. “She in pain still,” I heard Yuzuru said. I opened my eyes to see Javier. “Hi Javi,” I greeted him. Yuzuru sat on the bed and held my hand again. Javier sat down in a chair next to the bed.
“How are you feeling?” he asked me. “Alright. Waiting for the medicine to kick in,” I told him. “Are you going to be able to come with us to the Short Program?” he asked curiously. I nodded my head. “Don’t force yourself,” Yuzuru told me with worry.
“I want to watch you two skate,” I told Yuzuru. Yuzuru looked very worried. “The doctors said that it’s nothing major. I should be fine in a few days,” I told them.
They gave me a nod. Yuzuru was worrying too much.
We arrived at the venue to see a sea of media trying to take picture. Yuzuru and Javier tried to block them from taking picture of me. I had to wear make-up to cover the bruise on my forehead. I never wore make up until now. Luckily, I packed some with me.
Once inside the venue, we settled at our designated spot. Yuzuru sat me down on the bench. “How are you feeling?” he asked with concern. “I’m okay,” I told him and gave him a small smile. My head wasn’t hurting too much now. I didn’t want him to worry too much.
Apparently, some of the media filmed the incident and asked about me. Of course, Brian and Yuzuru didn’t say anything.
Yuzuru tried to stay focus and not watch the performances of other skaters. Yuzuru was going to skate first and Javier would follow. After a long wait, it was Yuzuru’s turn. Brian gave him some words of encouragement and shook Yuzuru’s hand. Yuzuru gave my hand a squeeze before he skated away from us.
Now, he was skating for gold. He gave me a smile before he got into position. If he looked up, he could look at me easily. I hoped that he didn’t hurt himself. The music started to begin and Yuzuru gotten himself into the zone and concentrate.
He did the opening jump well. He managed to his jumps very well and his steps sequence was on point. His spins were all centered so that he didn’t lose points for traveling. His performance was perfect. A few times, I swore that he looked at me.
I clapped with the rest of the crowd.
Yuzuru bowed to the people and skated off the ice. He gave Brian a hug. “I did it,” he said to him. “You certainly did. Good boy,” Brian said. They had huge smiles on their faces. I couldn’t help but to smile at the sight.
Yuzuru gave me a smile. “Good work,” I told he. He gave me a nod.
“Okay. Go see your scores. I’m going to see Javi. Okay. I’m proud of you,” Brian told him walked to Javier. Yuzuru looked at me. “Here,” I said and gave him his vest and skate guards. Then, led him to the Kiss and Cry.
Yuzuru held a stuffed Pooh Bear and other things that the audience had thrown. “The short program score for Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan. 101.45.” I was so shocked by the score. He broke the world’s record and he broke the 100 point mark for men’s short programs.
I patted him on the back. “Good boy,” I told him. He gave me a smile. Then, we continued to watch the rest of the competition. Yuzuru was in the lead and Patrick Chan was about four points away. Javier Fernandez was behind Patrick Chan.
I was very proud of Yuzuru and Javier.
I was finished with washing his short program outfit and hung it to dry. Yuzuru was in bed waiting for me. I walked out of the bathroom and walked towards the bed. The lamp was the only light on as we were about to go to sleep.
“Tired?” I asked him and got into bed with him. He gave me a nod. It was understandable. Tomorrow, he had the free skate to worry about. I turned the light off and turned to face him. He pulled me into his arms gently.
“Do you think I can win gold?” he asked me curiously. I looked up at him. “If you believe in it. I know you will,” I told him. He kissed me on the forehead. “Thank you for being here with me,” he said. I closed my eyes and snuggled close to him.
“I should be thanking you for bringing me here. If it wasn’t for you, I probably be at home watching and supporting you from there,” I told him. “I want you to see me win gold. You know,” he told me. I knew the reason.
He still worried about me leaving him and not being able to see him go for a second gold at the Olympics four more years later. So, he was making the experience count. "I know. I love you,” I told him.
“I love you too,” I heard and drifted off into a deep sleep.
