As soon as I step through the school gate after my last class, Evy leaps at me. "Let's go."

I eye the truck with Jason behind the wheel. The deal was that I'll go straight home. But he also wants me to blend in, so being a loner for the rest of the school year might not be the best cause of action. Plus it's lame. And a drag since I actually enjoy being around people.

"I need to tell Jason."

She smirks. "You need permission from your cousin to hang with your friends?"

"He's supposed to give me a ride." I click my tongue. It's not that I need to justify myself to her. What's going on with my family isn't her business.

I stroll over to the truck and knock against the passenger side window. It slides down without a sound.

Jason frowns. "What is it?"

"Evy wants to hang out for a little bit."

"Not a good idea. I need to vet her first."

"You know, check her out."

"And how are you gonna do that? I don't even know her last name." Plus how long will this vetting take? I'm not willing to wait weeks every time I want to grab a coffee with someone.

Jason sighs. "It's part of the witness protection protocol. Let's stick to that for now."

"And what am I supposed to tell her? That I need a copy of her driver's license because my cousin is paranoid? It's not what I'd call inconspicuous."

Jason's gaze flicks to Evy. She smiles and waves. Not someone I'd call a threat.

"Fine. Stay in a public place and keep your eyes open. If there's anyone at all who looks suspicious, call me. And get her full name, and preferably her date of birth."

I roll my eyes. "Okay, I'll try my best."

"Have fun." The window glides up and he starts the truck. The tires spin in the snow before he takes off.

I turn to Evy with a grin. "All set."

"Great. You like hot chocolate?"

Anything with chocolate is a treat, even though I haven't had any in ages. Malcolm was always up in my grill about my weight. It had gotten so bad that I would puke up my food whenever I felt I ate too much.
