The rest of the week passed in a breeze. Most of it was spent doing daily check ins at the temple to monitor the spell. It remained frozen just as Caspian had said. It didn't leap at the golden rays or climb. It just stained the gold like a muddy puddle.
Everything seemed to be going well. Everything except Exton.
Even after Rye's constant complaining that she wanted to see him grow up, Exton showed up one afternoon and he had transformed from the budding thirteen year old to a brooding seventeen year old dressed in dark jeans and a leather jacket.
Rye was furious. She refused to speak to him and shut herself up in her room. Xavier pleaded with her, but it was no use.
"Mom," Exton sat outside her door on the floor. "Please open the door." Even his voice had changed. It was much deeper now, just like his father.
"Go away," Rye told him from the other side.
Exton remained quiet for a while. Rye began to fear he had actually gone away.
But then she heard his voice again.
"I'm bringing dad to come see you today." He said quietly.
Exton sat patiently on the floor as Rye opened her door.
"What do you mean?" she asked him, "I thought you said it wasn't safe for people to travel."
"It's not," Exton sighed. He got off the floor and dusted himself off.
It was still weird to Rye how her little baby had turned into a tall seventeen year old. He looked a lot like Xavier. Same curly hair, same sharp jawline, same green eyes.
"He really wants to see you," Exton said. "And I think to save his sanity, I should bring him here."
Rye's heart ached. She nodded her head without thinking too much. She didn't know what to expect when she agreed to Exton's plan. All she knew was Xavier was hurting and she needed to see him. Even if it wasn't her Xavier.
Exton gave her a sad smile, "Be back in a sec." he said as he began to disappear.
Rye walked back into her room. She sat down on the bed and waited. She didn't know what to do. How do you prepare to meet a guest from a different time?
An hour later, there was a knock at the door. Rye's heart jumped.
"Come in," She said quietly.
She held her breath as Xavier, a much older Xavier, walked into the room.
Rye was speechless. The Xavier in front of her was more built then her Xavier. His hair was much longer and he had a beard. His face was deep with lines and fading scars. Rye's eyes slowly traveled to his eyes and she almost wept.
Those beautiful green eyes that she had fallen in love with were filled with sorrow and hopelessness.
"Xavier," his name escaped Rye's lips.
The man before her gave her a broken smiled, "Hello, love."
Rye took a step closer to him. "What happened to you?"
"I lost you," Xavier said. He, himself was almost on the verge of crying.
"Why did you make Exton bringing you here?"
"I wanted to see you," Xavier said slowly. "I needed to see you. Exton tells me about you all the time."
Rye laughed as tears fell down her face. "He's a good boy."
