Fred read the list
His vision stalled
She wanted ranch hands!
He was galled

Well for her affection
He refused to grovel
She was getting a holster
For her shovel
(He’d already bought it)

He looked at the gift
He’d made for the others
His Elf friends
Sisters and brothers
It would have been more
If he’d had his druthers
(But he didn’t, and so . . .)

Next he spoke to Santa
Asked about Mabel
Laid all his cards
Upon the table
(He didn’t have many flars)

All those things
She’d said she wanted
Had left him feeling
A little daunted
(What would she say?)

But Santa smiled
And patted his head
Said, ‘Don’t you worry,
My friend Short Fred.’
(Somehow he felt better)

‘Mabel will know,
And this is true.
Just how much
She means to you.
With giving gifts
The tradition’s long
And while asking Santa
Is never wrong
What you’ve chosen to give
I s this wonderful song.’

Fred gathered the B Band
Showed them what to play
In time to rehearse
For Christmas Day
(It was their gift too)

When they were done
He heard words in his ear
Mabel was hugging him
‘That was beautiful, dear.’
