Kit sat on Rye's bed and munched on a turkey sandwich as she did her make up.
"Red lips or coral pink?" Rye asked the little boy.
"What color is your dress?" Kit wondered aloud.
"It's silver...and sparkles a lot."
"I thought the dress code was all black," Kit picked up the invitation card, "It says all black."
"I promised someone I would give them hell, and I can't do that wearing black."
"You're also not invited to the party," Kit pointed out as he watched Rye apply the dark red lipstick in the mirror.
"No one tells me what to do," Rye said wiping the corners of her mouth, "Especially, that wrinkled tortoise. God, she's the human equivalent of wet socks."
Kit laughed at Rye banter.
"Don't get any crumbs on my bed!" Rye complained watching the boy roll around in laughter holding a piece of the sandwich.
"Sorry," Kit said sitting back up smiling, "My dad doesn't let me eat in the bedroom."
"What about your mom?"
Kit looked down at his sandwich and shrugged, "I don't know, I don't remember her."
Rye paused to look at the boy. Her heart ached watching him sit staring at his sandwich.
"My mom died when I was little," Kit said quietly, "I don't really remember her...and my dad gets sad if I ask about her."
"Hey," Rye walked over to the boy and put an arm around him, "I'm so sorry. I know how you feel. My dad passed away recently."
"Do you miss him?"
"Everyday," Rye gave the boy a sad smile.
"Are you going to cry now?" Kit asked making Rye laugh suddenly, "You eyes will look like raccoons if you cry."
"I'm not going to cry," Rye said getting up, "I'm going to make others cry tonight."
"You're scary," Kit laughed.
As Rye finished her makeup and hair, Kit sat and watched. When it was time for Rye to put on her dress, he got up and said his goodbyes and slipped out of the room.
Rye had found the perfect dress in her closet. It fit her like a glove. The shiny material glittered brilliantly every time she moved.
Once she was all dressed, she pulled out the remote and laid back in bed. She was waiting for the perfect time to make an entrance and arriving too soon would ruin it. She watched mindless T.V until she heard the music come to life downstairs and the voices of the crowd.
