I wouldn’t have dared to go out on a Thursday night, if it weren’t for this occasion. It was Sara’s birthday, and we had planned a special surprise party. She was pretty bummed the entire day since we all had told her we had prior commitments today, so she had to cancel her little birthday treat at Pizza by the bay after school.

Her brother was our messenger and spy, who had now texted that he had been successful to drag her out of the house. He had told her he needed to get some stationary for school, and couldn’t go out alone at night. She had grumbled but agreed to going out.

She had no idea that she was gonna be blindfolded soon and brought to Mannat, where we all were. The backyard was decorated with shimmering purple lights and pink balloons. Her parents were right behind her car, so they won’t be left out in her thirteenth birthday celebrations.

“Guys, where is the cake?” Aryan asked across the backyard and Sasha pointed at the table. It was beautiful and special, so it was a surprise in a surprise. In her honor, we had a three tier cake, with our gifts spread around it.

I had decided to gift her Swarovski flower display piece, since she was obsessed with both crystals and flowers. It was a delicate piece of work, exquisite and unique.

Just as I was getting the last of the balloons in place, my phone chimed with a new text.

Almost there- Arjun

“Guys, they are near!” I announced and we all rushed to our hiding place. The plan was to get her in, and her brother, Arjun, opening her blindfold. We were gonna let her see around, intake what was going on and we’d hug tackle her from behind.

She came in wearing black skinnies and sneakers, and I felt bad for her. We all were in party dress, and the birthday girl was in simple jeans. But we had made arrangements for her outfit too, which was now lying in the guest room inside Aryan’s house.

Arjun took the blindfold off and jumped back, Sara snapped her eyes open.

“Arjun you idio…” she stopped mid tracks and looked around wide eyed. Judging from the fact that her jaw was almost touching the fresh green grass, it was safe to say she was awestruck.

“Happy birthday!” we all jumped on her, causing her to almost lose balance and crash on the ground. We were cheering while she still absorbed everything in.

“This is…extraordinary!” she hugged us all, and we high-fived each other. Her parents came in, and she hugged them at the last.

“You knew about this?” she asked them and they both shrugged casually. Grinning even wider, her eyes fell on the cake waiting for her. She moved towards it, but we built a fence around it.

“The birthday girl needs a birthday outfit.” Niall pointed out and she smiled sheepishly at the mess she was. A manservant came in to guide her into the guest room which was hers tonight, and she went in.

Playing music on loud, we all were chatting away when Sara walked in with the purple and black dress. It was girlie and not my style, but I had to admit that she looked stunningly beautiful in this outfit. Her hair was naturally curly, and the half up- half down hairstyle made her look like the princess she was.

“She’s growing up way too fast, isn’t she?” her dad wrapped his hands around her as she went over to the cake and blew out the candles. I looked away, the thoughts about my parents crossing my mind. I shook their image away, concentrating on Sara and the happy birthday song we were singing aloud. This was her day, and it wasn’t fair for me to get the mood down by whining over my past. And then, my parents- my dad to be more exact- hardly had the right to ruin a special day.
