It took a moment to process what had happened. Kylo hadn't had time to prepare himself for the Force lightning that was about to hit him, but before it could, a stormtrooper jumped in his way.
The body soared above them, hit the stairs, tumbled down, and hit their back.
Smoke came out of the helmet that sparked and beeped and sizzled.
Kylo hurried to them. He squatted, hands shaking. Leather covered fingers pried the helmet off of the head of who was under it.
He collapsed then, helmet dropping from his hands. "No," he choked.
You lay there, dead in front of him, eyes frozen up at the ceiling. Your lips were parted with the shock of pain, stains of black as ebony as his cloak staining your veins beneath your skin.
The Emperor shook his head. "Oh no, no, no. A shame. What a shame this is. A waste." His voice was twinged with disappointment. "My own apprentice."
Kylo stared at you.
Broken.
Confused.
"You killed her," he whispered.
"What did you say to me, boy?"
Kylo raised his head. "I said you killed her."
His laughter filled the room. "No! She killed herself. This foolish, pathetic girl took a hit for you. You killed her just as you killed your child!" The Emperor smiled at Rey. "But there is still one."
Rey wasn't listening. She stared at your body, tears leaking from her eyes. Your body. The body of her sister.
"Rey, my child-"
"Never! I will never join you," she whispered, hiccuping with a cry. She looked at him with pure hatred. "I am not your child. You are nothing but a murderer. You killed her. You ended her life with you own hand and killed your own apprentice in the doing. It was you! It was-"
"Silence!" he demanded.
"No!"
"You don't seem to be in the position to be making threats like this, dear child," he said.
"We will kill you." She clenched her fists.
"We?" he teased. He was genuinely enjoying this moment. "It seems to me that only one of you are in any condition to fight me."
Palpatine was right. Kylo was on the ground, skin a sickeningly color of white. All of the color had been drained out of his face. He sat there, hands open, limp on his lap, lips parted, eyes glazed over. He was in shock. He didn't move. He didn't seem to blink or breathe.
Loosening her fists, Rey turned. "Ben," Rey said. She held out her hand the way he did to her - the way you did to her - all those years ago. "Come on. Join me."
Kylo did not move in response to Rey's proposal. He didn't even spare her a glance. He was a broken man, hands trembling as he brought himself out of his shock enough just to touch his wife's hair.
"Ben!" She was desperate. Tears streaked down. "Please."
He looked, eyes red. "Why?" he asked, voice laced with venom. "I am not on your side of this. You and I have made that clear several times since we met. And you will throw me in prison after this war or you will die by my hand."
"Not for me," she said. "For her. This isn't about the Resistance or the First Order, the Jedi or the Sith, me or you. He killed your wife and your child. Join me, and we will kill him together."
