el wiped the already squeaky clean countertops off for what seemed like the hundredth time that morning, just for something to do. she waited for the small bell to ding when someone would walk through the threshold of the door. she'd hope it would be any moment now.

as she waited for someone to come in, she walked over to the old jukebox and slid a few quarters through the small slot and pushed in a button for a song. the song she picked happened to be "where is the love" by the monzas. El sighed and sat down at her favorite booth which was right by the rusty rotating fan.

it was annoying as hell but bobby, the owner of the diner refused to get another. the fan still blew somewhat cool air into the hot and stuffy diner, the summer air refusing to leave the diner. she wiped the back of her palm to her forehead and slouched back into the red seat beneath her.

her eyes were doused with sleep and she figured, no one's here, i can just rest my eyes for a little bit- and so she did. but as soon as she closed her eyes, the bell rang.

el sat up straight in her seat only to find her best friend walking through the door. she rolled her eyes at him, "bet you were expecting a big buff guy to walk through the door. but alas, you're still stuck with me bub." her curly-haired best friend said as he walked up to her.

she chuckled, "no, i wasn't. i just wanted someone besides you to come to this diner."

"it will crowd up around noon and you know it. all those sweaty teens coming in to see you." said dustin with a wink. "ha as if. the only thing they expect from me is their burger to be cooked right and that their milkshake has the right amount of sprinkles on it." el scoffed.

dustin sighed, "someday someone beside me will have respect for you."

el giggled, "sure. since your here- and you want food, let me guess you want a chocolate milkshake with extra whipped cream and extra sprinkles?" she asked, "you know me so well." he said with a smile.

as el prepared his milkshake dustin heard the town hall clock strike noon. the local diner happened to be right in the town square and was easy access to anyone in the square. like dustin predicted, a few minutes after the clock bells chimed, teenagers came flooding through the doors. almost as if it were the last day of school and all the students were trying to get out of one door at once.

the teenagers lined up at the front counter and rang the service bell obnoxiously, "alright, alright! just give me a damn second!" el called from the kitchen. moments later she came out swiftly through the doors and slid dustin's milkshake down the counter to him. he skillfully caught it in the palm of his hand and began to drink it quickly.

el was practically the only person who worked at the diner, she worked as a waitress and a cook all by herself and somehow all of the teens expected her to make their orders all at once. one by one she took on all of the orders and wrote them all down quickly. when she reached the back of the line a lanky boy stood there, he seemed like he was in some sort of daze as he stared down at the checkered floors.
