Chapter 6: Fate, or Something Like It

.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

I heard a heart monitor beeping, the sound of people discussing things walking back and forth. A hundred different things going on simultaneously, but with a calculated rhythm. The world was revolving as it should, but my head was spinning out of control. Shoes were being scuffed, some people were laughing while others were crying, and I was trapped somewhere between life and a strange coherent dream world. It hurt to open my eyes, but I managed to sneak a peek as the nurse checked my monitor and vitals. I heard people discussing my medical chart. Finally I opened my eyes fully.

"Well good evening, how're you feeling today Ms. Conaway." Said a cheery redhead wearing Daffy Duck scrubs, she was ridicilously cheery by my throat was dry.

"Water..." I managed to croak out.

Just then a stranger walked through my hospital door with a bottle of Sprite and a packet of Doritos in one hand, and a bouquet of purple irises in the other.

He was tall, at least six feet with a strong build and he wore a red flannel shirt with a beat up pair of blue jeans. His hair was golden brown tinged with what can only be described as the sun, and his eyes were a bright cerulean blue with tiny specks of green. He smiled while he walked through the door, showing off slight dimples and perfectly strait white teeth. And his smile was amazing, all warm and familiar, and a shiver of anticipation ran down my spine for no apparent reason. He was tanned from the sun and had a flawless hardworking face. And God was he beautiful, like the sunshine after the rain. He was looking directly at me as he addressed the nurse.

"Hi Daisy, how's everything today?" He said

"She's doing a lot better but she sure is out of it. Take care of her will ya?" She called over here shoulder grinning as she walked out of the room.

"I will." He stated simply.

I stared at him in complete wonder and confusion as he put down the Doritos and Sprite. He poured me some water then sat down at the edge of my bed, holding the cup to my lips, I grabbed the cup from him. He was smiling. I dropped my eyes and let them wandered to the irises.

"Ah," he said walking towards the sink, "I'll throw these in some water."

"My Mom & Dad?" I asked

"They're at home with Cade, they'll be back in a few."

"You... know my family?" I questioned

"Yea, I've met your family." I figured that was the end of the subject for him.

Just as I was starting to get an explanation out of him Mom and Dad walked through the door. Mom was crying and Dad was smiling like a little kid. I'd never seen them so happy in my life. I barley noticed all the ivy's that were stuck in my arm or the pain meds, because all I saw were their faces. They told me about the accident, about the semi. Then they told me about the piece of glass, and how it had punctured my lung. Eventually they noticed the stranger in my room and mentioned him as well.

"Thank God for Dunstan. If he hadn't been there..." Mom was crying again.

I looked thoughtfully at his perfect face. He seemed to be cringing, I wondered if it was from the memory of my accident.

"Mom, Dad," I said, "go home and rest. It's late and Cade needs you, I'll be fine here."

"I'm not leaving you alone again sweetheart." Mom said.

"She won't be alone Mrs. Conaway, I'll be here."

"But Dunstan, you've been here the entire time, it's not fair..." Dunstan stopped my Dad's thought process.

"I live on a farm Mr. Conaway, I never get any sleep, this is really no hassle to me. So go home and rest." I nodded my head in agreement.

Mom and Dad stayed for about an hour as the doctor checked everything. The doctor looked at my x-rays and gave me a puzzling look.

"What is it?" Said Dunstan.

"It's just that her ribs aren't broken... in fact everything seems to be normal here." Everyone stared at me in wonder, I was just as confused as everyone else, probably more so.

"We're going to have to keep you for another day or two, we need to do more tests. But if everything turns out alright, it looks like you'll be going home in no time." He said with a smile.

After the doctor left, I finally managed to convince my parents to go check on Cade. They left unwillingly, but it wasn't fair to either of them and Cade to be with me for so long. Besides, I had bigger fish to fry. The biggest being the handsome guy pacing around my hospital room. His phone rang and I studied him as he spoke, though he was talking quickly I gathered a few phrases about horses and feed.

"Sorry about that." He said as he hung up the phone. "My mom's been worried sick about things here."

"Your Mom?" I questioned stupidly.

"I'm sorry, I've never properly introduced myself yet... I'm Dunstan Stone." Just the way he said it gave me pause. His voice and actions were confident and calculated without being cocky. He was like a dream, the kind of dream you never want to wake up from because it's so unrealistic. There was something else though, I found him completely familiar.

"How'd you find me?"

"I was about a hundred feet away from you when I heard the crash. I called the cops and ran after you."

With every word I was growing more tired. Dunstan noticed my discomfort, putting a pillow under my head he told me, not very forcefully to go to sleep.

"Why me?"

"Fate... I guess." he replied.

Before I could form another coherent thought I was drifting off into a drug and painkiller induced sleep. And I couldn't help but dream about a golden haired blue eyed angle who saved me from almost certain death.
