He tries to move forward but only ends up hitting the ground face first. She laughs at him. He tries to get back up onto his knees but it feels impossible. He hates that he's trying to hard to do something he doesn't even want to do. It feels like it takes an eternity but he manages to get back onto his knees. Getting up from there is even more difficult and just ends with him falling again.
"Guess you don't want it that bad," Emily decides with a sigh. "And I was rooting for you too."
She flips him over onto his back before grabbing the tape and sleeping mask.
"Please," he mumbles, shaking his head and trying desperately to find a way to get away, "don't, ple—"
"If you make this difficult, I won't stop to let you eat again," she threatens, sounding far too casual. "Stay still and be quiet. Close your mouth."
He wants to fight but, weighing his options, he decides losing this round is better than possibly starving to death in the trunk of a car. He doesn't know how long this drive is going to be and he really doesn't want to starve through the rest of it so he does as told. She smiles brightly before putting the tape from ear to ear. Next is the sleeping mask and it takes all of his self control to force himself to stay still and not fight back. He tears up a bit before squeezing his eyes closed in preparation.
"Aw, don't cry," she says softly as she lifts his head up carefully and puts the sleeping mask on. "Everything is gonna be okay."
"Blood tests came back," a detective informs Elijah, "it's confirmed it's his blood, not hers. And we managed to track their movements a little further, to a stop in an abandoned lot. Found these there," she carries on, setting down a labeled evidence bag with Awsten's rings in it. "Do you recognize these?"
"They're his rings," Elijah conforms quietly, giving a nod. "Was there anything else there?"
"Her phone. So neither of them have phones now unless she picked up a burner along the way," the detective answers, keeping an intentionally blank expression. "The stop was made outside the city, still in LA county but on the way out from the looks of it. We're not really sure where they're heading at this point, it's getting more difficult to track her with traffic cameras since they're out of the city and we have to work with other police departments. I'm trying to keep it on track but collaboration isn't exactly working out too well. It'll be a high profile case when it gets out to the press so the department of the city they were last seen in is trying to take the case so they'll get the credit."
"Seriously? They're making it difficult because they fucking want credit?" Elijah snaps before forcing himself to reign in his temper. "Ask them if getting credit for solving this is more important than getting him home to his children."
"Unfortunately, morale seem to be lacking," the detective says with a frown before switching gears. "But, since I mentioned this getting out to the press, I thought we should talk about that. I know that you said everyone close to him has agreed that this getting out is only going to make it more of a mess but the media coverage could help. We don't know where when's taking him and we can't look everywhere so having the public aware and keeping an eye out could help significantly. The more time that passes, the less of a chance we have at finding him alive, or at all. Think it over, talk with his family and get back to me."
