Disappointment struck like lightning through my body. I felt instantly nauseous. Acutely aware of my surroundings, I buried the shock of rejection under an unreadable face of blankness, while my eyes lingered over the message filling the screen of my D-vice.
The real world could be so disappointing.
That colostomy-bag-with-a-face gets to be an Alpha, on one of the biggest gaming franchises whereas I, on the other hand, have had so many rejections I've had to re-verify my account twice this week alone because I've been deleting so many messages the system thought I was a virus.
I stupidly thought that I could be in with a chance. Sure, I don't like games like this but gaming companies will usually select players against type. Some Alphas are chosen, not because they have the best chance of enjoying the game, but because they want them to find something wrong with the game that a player familiar with the genre may overlook. Equally as important, they want to see if their game has crossover appeal.
My last hope shouldn't have been such a long shot. Oooh, I could feel my face contorting, emotions building, tear ducts about to burst. I needed to get away before —
"Teachers have unlimited detentions they can issue..." stated Miss Cruthers.
My steely resolve returned in an instant. I could cry later. I left the classroom without another word.
Outside, in the hallway, I caught Danielle, still drunk on her newfound Alpha success. She was mid-way through instructing Krystal and Cara on the plan for this evening. "We'll have to do my hair and makeup after detention otherwise it'll get ruined in those dusty, old machines..." her voice trailed off.
That's the best part about boarding school - the inescapable torment of having my arch nemesis in twenty-four-seven close proximity to me. Not only do we go to school together, but we get to live in the same hall.
My D-Vice buzzed again. One notification and one reminder. The automatic detention reminder from the school's system letting me know that I need to check into detention by 3:15pm. Yeah, wouldn't want to forget that. It didn't just happen five minutes ago.
