As soon as his lips touched mine, I pushed him back, softly but firmly.
"I'm sorry. I can't do this." I said quickly, looking at the ground.
Ryan didn't speak for a minute but then he put his arm around me. "Look, I'm sorry Gracie... I don't know what got into me... I thought that you saying you wanted to share this with someone was a hint and I like you - sorry I got the wrong idea." He rubbed slow circles on my back and I cuddled up to him.
"Ryan, you're gorgeous and funny and very kind but I just don't think of you like that, your like a really good friend."
He grinned. "That's good, I'm happy being that way. I guess I'm just feeling a bit lonely at the moment and I know you've been feeling down - I just want to make you feel better."
"I'm great." I said with a convincing smile. "And I can't believe you don't get girls throwing themselves at you all the time!"
He laughed. "Well, I guess I do get a bit of attention but I just really want a genuine girl like you that won't freak out if I tell them what happened to me. I don't want a one night stand either... I want someone to touch me in a loving way because up till now, its been more like a threat than a treat." He said with a small smile.
I totally understood this. "Hey, you'll meet someone wonderful. Everything happens for a reason and I'm sure the right girl will be just around the corner."
"You know, if my brother had been around, he would have really liked you... You're just his type."
I smiled a little and on the inside, I was grinning. "Why do you say that?" I asked.
"Well, he did have a girlfriend but she was so stupid and I didn't understand why they were together - he really liked strong people that had a drive. Besides, your gorgeous, he would have gone crazy for you as soon as he saw you."
That night, Ryan slept at mine - in fact he slept in the same bed as me. I left the window open like I did every night for Angelo. I knew he still visited me at night. I could just feel it.
Grace called my name in her sleep and I flew down, full speed to her open window. I hopped in, shook and my wings folded into my back. I turned round and there was my brother in her bed, staring at me with wide eyes.
He jumped off the bed and ran over to me and tried to throw a punch. "Get the fuck out of her room!" He shouted.
"Woah!" I blocked his punch easily and grabbed him then took him into the kitchen. He tried to shout but I clamped my hand over his mouth.
I set him down on her sofa. "Look, I'm not a thief or a rapist or anything." I explained lamely.
"What are you? You had wings! I've seen you before, you live a few doors down from me!" He half whispered half shouted.
He was referring to the lies I told when I came over to his.
"Angelo!" Grace shouted and she was crying, I could hear.
As quick as a flash, I was by her side, holding her close to me. She ran to the bathroom and threw up and I held her hair for her.
"Angelo?" Ryan asked. "That's sick, are you using my brothers name? And Grace, what the hell?"
She shot up and her face looked pale, her eyes wide. "Oh, Ryan... Erm..." She trailed off.
"Look, you may not recognise me... I was your brother in life." I said seriously.
Ryan ran towards me and tried to punch me again. I blocked it and he punched my stomach but recoiled in pain. He clutched his bleeding hand whilst I had felt nothing. "You bastard! Don't you care what I feel?! You don't even know me."
I sat down on a chair and put my head in my hands while Grace was dithering around, trying to help Ryan with his hand.
"Look, you should really listen to your brother. It will be hard to come to terms with it but he's telling the truth." She said sadly.
"Right, go on then!" Ryan shouted.
I looked up at him and saw the recognition in his eyes. He was beginning to see the likeness. "I was murdered." I began and already Ryan was crying. I could tell he was confused. One part of him believed I was his brother, another didn't.
"When I was alive, I played football and I loved rugby. You bought me a signed t-shirt for my birthday, remember? I loved grunge and rock music but I also loved to play jazz on the piano, especially Autumn Leaves. I was a pretty lanky 15year old when I was killed by Karen who framed my murder, making it looked like I committed suicide. It wasn't till Grace revealed the truth that she got locked away. I know she hurt you too Ryan..."
Ryan was shaking with tears and Grace came over and hugged him.
"Then why are you here? You're dead, it doesn't make any sense." He said whispered in a hoarse voice.
"I'm no longer human but I serve the human race. I am an angel, Ryan. Grandpa is the leader of the angels and I am next in line. I met Grace 5 years ago when I fell down from the sky and she fixed me. Look at me Ryan." I said sternly.
He hesitantly raised his eyes until they met my body which was hovering above the ground, my long white wings were stretched out fully.
He jumped up and looked at me carefully. "What was your favourite colour?"
"A dark mundane blue." I always used to say that.
"Who was your girlfriend?"
I groaned. "Michelle or 'shelly the simpleton'." It was what he used to call her. I saw the beginnings of a smile and I laughed.
"Do you have any tattoos?"
"No but I have a scar from when I got stitches when I was 10. You know, when you pushed me down the stairs."
His eyes were so wide, I thought they might fall out of his head.
"I know I've changed a lot but its still here." I grabbed his hand and pressed it to the scar which was shaped like an X on the back of my head.
"Angelo." Was all he said.
I pulled him into a hug and he relaxed into it, crying uncontrollably. Grace smiled at me but she looked sad. I don't know why.
"Can you please just keep this a secret for now?" I asked Ryan. He looked as though he was about to argue but then he just nodded. "Also, did you and Grace sleep together?" I asked quietly.
He shook his head. "No me and her are just friends." He told me just as quietly.
I promised to see Grace again, come down and see how she was next month. This would be her 6th month of being pregnant and I needed her to realise I was there for her. She looked disappointed but just nodded.
