Ten Days

It's been a week since Heise fell unconscious—a week since Adira ordered Alexander to find the demon that put her child in this state, a week since Adira erected a flaming barrier that burnt anyone she didn't want going near her child.

So, in other words, it was only Casimir, Alexander, Roman and the doctors, who were allowed to go through her barrier.

She had been on her child's bedside since day one and refused to leave—not even when Casimir asks her to change shifts and let her rest.

There was that time when Casimir tried to move her to a bed so she could rest properly but she burnt him instead and gave him a fiery glare. Since then, Casimir learned never to remove Adira from her son's side.

Casimir passed through the barrier of flames and approached the sleeping woman hunched over Heise's side.

She was very pale and the bags under her eyes were very visible that served as proof of how weary she had become since Heise fell ill.

The doctors of the Bycrest Kingdom diagnosed Heise as being poisoned by this peculiar poison, from an unknown origin, that kills the host after ten days.

However, though they know what was poisoning Heise, they didn't know the cure to it. Albeit, King Raidyn said the Maiden of Light's power could detoxify whatever poison was killing the child.

Adira could kneel in front of Iris and beg her to save Heise's life but Casimir stopped her, saying that a Queen should never bow to anyone and that she should, instead, compel the woman to cure her son.

But Adira knew Iris would never do that. No matter what she did, she knew Iris would never help her. This was Iris! The woman who's hated her even from her first life!

"Casey?" Adira stirred awake and rubbed her tired eyes before sitting up straight.

"I'm sorry I woke you up. You need to rest more, Adira. That won't do any good to both of our children."

"Even if I try, I can't, Casey. I always see Heise's crouched form as he continued to cough out blood before he eventually fell down. All I could see when I close my eyes is my little boy's suffering."

Adira slowly shared the traumatic image of her son falling as tears spilled down from her tired and puffy ashen eyes and sobs racked her worn out body.

Her husband took her into his warm fold and tried to comfort her silently. Even though he knew how strong his wife was, he was also painfully aware that her sole weakness was her heart for her family.

And he knew that this incident had hit her too hard and at the spot where it hurt her the most.

He must make sure he finds the one who did this to his son—who caused such heartache to their family—and he will make sure he'll hurt them a hundred times more.

Oh, he won't kill them. That is too mild of a punishment and too quick. He will make sure they suffer so bad they'll wish he just outright killed them.

Cradling his woman in his arms, who fell asleep from extreme exhaustion, a deadly glint coruscated on his icy platinum eyes.

...

Raidyn visited the Versaillus' room, but couldn't get past through Adira's burning barrier. So he opted to say his piece from the outer wall instead.

Casimir had briefly stepped outside and so, Adira was sitting alone with her son.

"Princess, if it helps, I'd like to tell you a legend."

He started, but Adira did not answer nor even turned to acknowledge him— although he kind of expected that. Regardless, the man continued,

"There was a legend that was passed down to our royal heirs. A maiden, so fair, beautiful, kind and strong, who was our ancestor, was given the title of Maiden of Light. It was because like a warm beacon of light, she guided her people to prosperity, peace and healed them from their troubles.

They say that this maiden, did not only have the light sword magic, but also the ability to attract all attributes towards her and also the power to devour anything and everything if she so desired.

All she had to do was wish for it to happen and the Gods will be at her beck and call for she was their most beloved daughter."

Raidyn finished and studied the unchanging expression on the mother's face. It was too empty and stoic as she continued to watch over the child.

"I'm not saying the Gods don't love us. But we never know what a little prayer could do. Especially you."

The man continued to encourage Adira and barely whispered the tail end of his sentence. He needed to provoke her into saying a prayer.

To witness her bloom into the full-fledged Maiden of Light. To see her realize what she was all along.

Show me a good debut perfomance, Oh miss beloved child of the heavens.

He didn't how know how long it took before Adira finally twitched and moved gently to reach out for her little child's hands.

There was nothing to lose with a little prayer, right? The Gods will help her save her son, right?

"Please, I beg you, whichever God is listening right now, save Heise."

Adira whispered against Heise's hand and closed her eyes. She knew it was futile although she was a believer. However, she still chose to believe that the Gods would help her.

Sadly, nothing happened and Heise was still asleep and unresponsive. So the woman could only cry in pain and sorrow.

She couldn't help but question the way she cared for Heise. Was it enough? Did she lack anywhere? Where did she go wrong? Why did this happen to her son? Why Heise?

...

Alexander finally returned after investigating and tracing where the poison came from.

After his extensive investigations, he found that it was from the cakes the Lord Sylveris, or so they thought, gave to the princess. And Alex wasn't even the least bit surprised when he found out whose doing it was.

Because the cake was never meant to reach Heise. It was always meant for Adira. Heise just unfortunately took the first bite out of it and suffered instead.

Passing through the barrier the woman made—after ignoring the King of Bycrest, who oddly and awkwardly stood still outside the barrier—the knight knelt down to deliver his report.

"I found the person who sent the poison, Princess. They're currently at the border town between Bycrest and Versaillus. What are your orders?"

"Take me there."

Was Adira's cold and deep response before her fires turned whitish-blue.

"I'll personally burn them to ash."
