After driving for some time, we arrive at an abandoned building. “Where are we?” Jack chuckles. “This is my hideout. I know it doesn’t look like much on the outside, but it’s much nicer on the inside.” He smiles at me. “Of course it is.” He laughs. “Yeah, but I like it. I’ve been using this place for a very long time.” As we get out, Peter popped into my thoughts and I began to cry. Jack puts his arms around me. “There, there. You’re alright.” I started to really cry. “It-it’s not me.”
He sighs. “Is it that Peter guy you were with?” I nod. “It’ll be alright. I’m sure they were just saying that. They could be holding him hostage or something.” I looked up at Jack with a frightened look. “We’ll get him back.” I nod again. “Okay.” I take a deep breath and relax just a little.
*Grandpa Max’s POV*
The door opens and Jaedyn walks in. “C-Charlie? You look just like Charlie.” Jaedyn nervously smiles. “Yeah, that’s what I’ve been told. My name’s Jaedyn.” Jack doesn’t say anything, so I speak up. “Jack, I’d like for you to meet your daughter.” What now Jack? “Inhuman act, huh?” I mumble. I can see why he would think that though. Jaedyn holds out her hand and after a few minutes, Jack finally shakes her hand. “I-I’m not sure what to say.” Well, I’m sure she doesn’t either, yet.
Jaedyn chuckles a little. “I don’t either. This is all new to me. I just found out today that I was adopted.” She frowns. She must be thinking about the scientist and how he’s blackmailing her parents. “What’s wrong?” Jaedyn looks at me and then back to Jack. “Uh, I’m not sure if I should say anything.” Jack turns and looks at me. “What’s going on, Max?” I look at Jaedyn and nod at her. “It’s fine.” She sighs. “Okay. Well, the scientist ‘friend’ he told you about. Well, he has my parents pay him five-hundred thousand pounds for me when I was born and now I think he is trying to get more money from them.” She sighs again.
“Are you sure?” Jack sounds furious. Jaedyn hangs her head down. After a minute or so, she looks back up at Jack. “Yes. I am sure. I overheard my dad talking to someone on his mobile. He was yelling at whoever to not threaten him and he didn’t care about their agreement anymore.” Jaedyn’s facial expression changed from sad to slightly scared. Jack must be really furious. I wonder what she’s thinking.
After a few minutes, Jaedyn starts to look a little annoyed. “Just so you know. All I wanted was to meet you and maybe get to know you, but if you have no intentions of getting to know me, than it’s your loss and I won’t bother you ever again.” I can’t see Jack’s face, so I don’t know what kind of facial expression he’s making, but it must not be a good one. “Do you think I don’t want to get to know you? I had no idea I had a daughter. If I had known sooner, I would’ve been in your life, gotten to know you.”
How dare he say that? He barely was with Charlie… even when she got taken, he was forced to come ‘rescue’ her. I made a scoff kinda noise and Jack looks back at me. “Maybe, but we all know you have been ‘too busy’ saving the world to care about anyone besides yourself.” Jack fully turns towards me. “Don’t even start that.” I stand up. “Oh? How’s Gwen and Anwen? Do you still see them or talk to them?” Jack lowers his head a little. “Uh, who’s Gwen and Anwen?
I give Jaedyn a mean look. I wasn’t meaning to, but I am just furious Jack would even say such a thing. Getting Jaedyn’s hopes up and stuff. Jaedyn storms out of my office. I can hear her say, “Let’s go.” She opens the door and heads out. Thankfully Peter doesn’t slam the door…That’s probably why she went out first. “What the hell was that about?” Jack looks like he’s mad at me. “I was meaning to give you that look, not her. Now she probably hates me.”
“Well, do you come off harder than you are.” I frown. “Do I?” Jack scoffs. “Yes.” He turns a little. “I’ll go after her and talk to her. I’ll let her know you aren’t as mean as you look.” We both laugh. “Thank you Jack. I’m glad you want to get to know your daughter.” He smiles at me. “Me too. I just don’t know how.” He frowns a little and then walks out of my office.
I hate it when Gwen gets mad at me. I’ve known her a long time. It’s not like I asked Anwen to join me or anything…She asked if she could join me. As I get closer to my home, I get a call. I look at the number. It’s been a long time since I talked to him. “Captain Jack Harkness.” I try to sound more confident than I feel. “Hello Jack. It’s been a long time.”
Indeed it has. I don’t say anything right away, but I’m sure he can hear me breathing. “Jack. I was wondering if you could come see me. I know it’s been a long time, but I have something for you to see. Could you indulge an old man one last time, please?” I sigh. I hate when he says things like that. “Sure. Do you want me to come now?” I imagine he’s smiling right now. “Yes, that would be nice.” I don’t really want to, but since he asked nicely and I haven’t seen him in a long time, I decide to go ahead. “Alright. I’ll be there soon.” I don’t hang up right away. “It’s good to hear from you Max.” I miss him, but I miss her the most. Along with Ianto. “Same.” I hang up and head over to his house.
I get there as soon as I can. I didn’t rush, but I didn’t take my time either. I get up to the door and ring the doorbell. Max opens the door. “You haven’t changed a bit Jack. You look good.” I smile. “You look good too.” Max scoffs. “No, I’m an old man Jack.” He motions for me to come inside. “Jack, before I tell you anything, I need you to sit down. Let’s go into my office.”
Well, this can’t be good. I begin to panic a little. Maybe he’s dying. No, I can’t think about things like that…I don’t want to think about it. I give Max a concerned look. “Okay.” We walk into his office, and Max closes the door. Max sits down at his desk. “I have something you need to know, but I don’t want you to be angry with me.” I don’t say anything. “Okay…When Charlie was shot and we were able to rush her to the hospital, one of my scientist friends took her baby out before she passed and put the baby into a surrogate. The baby was born and has grown up.”
What? I don’t understand. It takes only mere seconds for me to realize and process what Max just said to me. “You did what?!? How could you do something so inhuman?” Max didn’t say anything. I rose up out of my seat. I can’t believe he would do something like that. I am about to leave when someone knocks on the door. “Enter.” The door opens and a young woman walks in. Oh my. She.Looks.Just.Like.Charlie.
