Chapter 9: Sleepover

Slowly, I opened my eyes to see Yuzuru who looked very worried. He had his hands on my shoulders.  “Daijoubu?” he asked me with concern. Thunder roared again. Instantly, I shut my eyes tighter and covered my ears again. My body shuddered from the sound.

“You scared of thunder?” he asked me. I nodded my head. “It…reminds me of the car accident,” I told him. “Oh,” he understood. He closed the curtains and pulled a chair for me. I sat down and he opened his laptop computer.

He turned on a show so that we could watch together. After a while, I couldn’t hear the thunder because I was focused on the show.

We turned our head to the door to see his mother who had a smile on her face. “Yuzuru. Ayako. Dinner,” she told us. We got up from our seat and walked to the dining table. She looked very happy about the meal.

We were having miso soup, Kakuni [stewed pork belly with large pieces of daikon], Kinpira gobo [braised burdock and other root vegetables], a small salad, and slices of cooked salmon. “Everything looks good,” Yuzuru said and sat down. It reminded me of the old times.

“It’s all thanks to Ayako,” she told him. I sat down in front of them. “Itadakimasu.” I had to say that the food was delicious. It had been a long time since I had a nice home cook meal. At times, I missed my mother’s cooking.

Next thing we knew, the lights went out. “Oh dear, the wind must have knocked the power line,” his mother concluded.

I got my phone and turned on the flashlight. Yuzuru looked out the window. Some parts of the city was black. The storm got worse. “Maybe it’s best that Ayako stay here for the night,” his mother suggested.

I wasn’t so sure about that. Then again, I had fears of a thunderstorm. “I think that would be best,” Yuzuru told her. {I don’t get a word in this?} “I really don’t want to intrude,” I told them. “It’s alright Ayako. I would get worried if something happens to you on the way home,” his mother told me.

{There is no point in arguing with her.}

“Okay then,” I said to her. It was a while until the lights came back on. We continued with our dinner.

After dinner, Yuzuru and I walked back to his room. I made sure to call Miyu and she was fine with me staying Yuzuru’s home for the night. “You can take the bed. I’ll take the floor,” he told me and reached for an extra set of blankets from the closet. “I don’t mind the floor. Really,” I told him. He shook his head. “You are a guest,” he told me.

Before I said anything else, Yuzuru’s mother walked into the room. “I’m sorry to interrupt. I was trying to find something that you could wear for tonight and couldn’t find anything,” Yuzuru’s mother told me. “I may have something,” Yuzuru said and looked through his drawers.

“I hope you don’t mind staying in his room for the night. I trust that you two won’t do anything,” she told me. “Oka-san!” Yuzuru started to blush. So did I. She gave me a smile and walked away. “I already known Yuzuru for two days and this has happened.

After a while, Yuzuru got a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. “I hope these will do,” he told me. I gave him a nod. “Is it okay if I take a shower?” I asked him. “Of course,” he said and got me a coupe towels. “You can use my mom’s shampoo,” he told me. I gave him a nod and walked to the bathroom.
