Why is everyone obsessed with love poems

is it the honeyed words

or sugary sentiments?

does biting into a love poem sate your sweet tooth?

are the darker poems bitter on your tongue?

people tell me that love poetry warms them

i ask: warm like a blanket- cozy and familiar? do love poems smell like sleep and feel like safety after a hard day?

or is it the warmth of a fire? unpredictable, uncontrollable, dangerous

is the allure of it the fear of leaning in and losing yourself entirely?

is that what the reader wants?

or is it that

for just a moment

you're in a different place

in the body of the poet

in the arms of someone who loves you

before the final stanza ends

and you are back to where you started
