In the Shadows
Lily lowered her hand, "Why not?" Lucy asked.
"We stopped. Now, no one remembers."
"But, but, there has to be a reason. Something for it to make sense."
"Because there has to! None of this makes any sense!"
Lily was smiling again, "Not everything has to make sense."
Lucy was pouting, the frown marring her features in the dark as she tried to fend off the cramps in her legs, "I want to get out of here."
"You will." Lily promised, "But not yet. Can you imagine how mad Cam would be if I took you with me?"
"You're leaving?" she shrieked, "You can't leave!"
"I can't be here when Cam comes back." Lily said softly, her voice tinged with fear, "You don't know the things he'll do Lucy Goose..."
"I can't." The confession sounded like it pained her, the very notion that this girl, who could appear out of nowhere couldn't pass on the truth about this man, to someone she cared about, it was like some twisted dream and nothing, nothing about it was right, "Close your eyes for me okay?"
"Because, everything will be better when you open them again." Lily promised, "That's what you've always told me. Now, close your eyes."
Lucy closed her eyes and almost immediately, the comforting presence of the other girl disappeared, she kept her eyes closed, scrunching them shut against the darkness. It had to get better. It had too.
Her hands fisted in her hair as she sobbed, not now, this couldn't happen now. She couldn't fall apart in the darkness. Couldn't. Wouldn't. Shouldn't.
" Tell me why you'd hurt someone who's always loved you like a sister!"
"Cam." She said, her voice whisper soft, like a prayer and tortured lament rolled into one, "Cam made me do it." She looked up into the disbelieving eyes of her best friend, "You don't understand the kind of power he has Lu... he scares me."
What was this madness? She had to focus once again, find her way out of the darkness.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
"They've really done a number on you, haven't they?"
Lucy's eyes snapped open as her hands reached out meeting the stone wall, "Who's there?"
"You really don't remember, do you?"
"Remember what?" she demanded, "What- where are you?"
"I'm around. It's not important where I am." The voice continued, "Cam's coming." She said, "Cam's coming and he's not alone. He's going to let you out and you have to run. You have to run as fast as you possibly can. You have to run like your life depends on it. Because it does Lu. It really does and I'm sorry."
