Chapter {O2} Reintroduced

I felt my eyes widen as I stared at the “stranger” I had met and revealed all of my life secrets to the night before.

On the other hand, he didn’t seem fazed at all by my presence. He merely gave me a warm while as he stuck his hand out.

“I’m David, nice to meet you, Catalina. Hope we can get to know each other better.”

I felt my eyes widen more in disbelief at what he said. Did he forget me? Had I mistaken this man for the person I had met last night?

A flurry of questions attacked my thoughts as I continued to gape at him unashamedly until I felt something nudge my side.

I jumped at the sudden contact and whipped my head to the side where I saw my mom looking at me with an expression of pure horror. Quickly realizing where I was, I turned back to my mom’s boyfriend who had retracted the hand he offered earlier, with a puzzled expression on his face.

I guess he really wasn’t the man from last night. Embarrassed by my own behavior, I quickly tried to redeem myself by being extra polite to him.

“Sorry, I’m a little out of it right now.” I explained lamely. Why was I so terrible at coming up with excuses on the spot?!

“It’s nice to meet you, too.” I said, smiling half-heartedly and desperately trying to avoid eye contact. I was never nice to the men my mom brought home, and it was strange trying to start.

David gave me a – very familiar – smile before he spoke.

“Clara’s told me a lot about you. It’s nice to finally meet you in person.” He said.

“Likewise.” I replied, awkwardly.

I heard my mom breathe a sigh of relief from beside me before she stood up.

“Well, I think it would be in your best interests to get to know each other better, so I’m going to go run some quick errands while you two chat.” She said excitedly with a clap of her hands.

I felt the same look of horror appear on my face, except this time it was because of the thought of being alone with my mom’s boyfriend. Was my mom really going to leave me alone in a house with a man I had just met five minutes ago? Assuming he really wasn’t “Tad” from last night…

As I was about to protest, my mom shot me a warning glance that shut me up completely. She was terrifying when she was angry.

“I’ll be back in an hour or two!” She exclaimed, her bubbly happiness returning. Yup, she was definitely bipolar.

I watched as she grabbed her keys off the counter and exited the house through the backdoor, panic starting to well up inside me again.

Silence poured into the kitchen as I stared at the tiled floor, mentally counting how many tiles there were; anything to avoid speaking to this man.

When I silence finally became too much for me, I reluctantly looked up at David, and I gasped at what I saw.

His mouth was pulled into an arrogant smirk and he was slouched in his chair instead of sitting up straight like he was before my mom left.

“Does your mother know you were at that club last night?” He asked, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

I felt my mouth fall open and I stared at him in horror before I composed myself and spoke,

“’Tad?!’” I exclaimed. Of course he was ‘Tad.’ I wouldn’t forget a face like that – I mean…what?

He snickered at my sudden outburst.
