"chew slower!" hae nagged as she watched her mom have a coughing fit, setting down her fork and putting her hand to her chest

her mom gripped the table with the other as the coughing got worse, hae ran around the table and patted her back to ease the coughing. nothing was working

half an hour and 3 glasses of water later the coughing had finally seized and her mom could talk again.

"don't worry too much, finish" her mom said, motioning over to hae's half finished pasta that had most probably gone cold by now

she could tell that the heavy coughing had scratched up her mom's throat and without a word she headed into the kitchen to fetch her mother a pain killer

she paused at the entrance, scanning around the kitchen. she hadn't used medications in a while but she snapped her fingers when her eye caught the cabinet slightly ajar

she slowly opened it and took a step back, shocked at what she was seeing

in the cupboard stood bottles upon bottles of different prescribed medications, all with her mother's name on them

"hae the pasta is getting co— what are you doing?!" her mom panicked, running in front of hae to block her view of the medicine cabinet

hae was frozen, unable to even speak.

her mom had been ill this whole time and hadn't even bothered to tell her.

"explain. now." hae yelled, she had never raised her voice towards her mother but she was hurt. she felt betrayed. worried. sick. all these emotions jumbled up in her body.

her mom sighed before grabbing hae's hands, leading her to the living room

"i didn't mean to hide it from you. you were so busy with your studies and finally making friends other than maryam that I decided I shouldn't worry you. i understand if you feel hurt but im truly fine" she said, a single tear rolling down her cheek.

hae put her head in her hands, she understood why her mom had hidden it from her but it honestly didn't make the situation any better. for all hae knew, her mom could have been dying and hae wouldn't have a clue

plus, there were way too many medications in that cabinet for a person that was 'fine'.

"when is your next doctors appointment"

her mom sighed before standing up, she walked into the kitchen and hae could hear her rummaging through things before she returned with a small white card in hand. she handed it to hae before retaking her seat beside her

"hey that's today" hae said, looking up from the card. her mom nodded and looked away

"so you were planning to go when i wasn't home?"

her mom nodded, "i book them when you have your daily study group time. when i drop you off at the library i go straight to the clinic"

hae bit her lip, trying to stop herself from crying. her mom went this far to make sure that hae wouldn't know she was ill, taking medications and attending appointments.

"I'll be going with you today" hae said with a shaky voice

her mom shook her head in disagreement, "you have to go to study group"

hae sent her mom a glare, "im going to the appointment. you lied to me mama, it's only fair"

and with that she walked away before her mom could object.

as 5:00 rolled around hae headed to her closet to change before heading down the stairs to find her mom

"mama!" she called out, silence.

she was used to her house being dead silent, after all only she and her mother lived in the pretty decent sized house

she walked around to the kitchen, she wasn't there

then she checked the living room, not there either

hae's eyes widened at the thought that maybe her mom left quietly so hae wouldn't tag along. she raced to the front door, swinging it open and stepping out

she scrunched her eyebrows, the car was still parked in the driveway

"mama!!" she yelled even louder as she re-entered the house

now she was panicking

she raced from room to room and checked everywhere but she just couldn't find her

a thud on the door, followed by frantic knocks made her jump before she opened the door

"hae, come come quick" said her mother's friend, ushering her into the car.

hae tried to ask questions, confused as to what was going on but no one answered her, everyone was talking over each other in panicked voices

"auntie!" hae whisper-shouted but loud enough to throw the car into an awkward silence

"what happened?! where are we going?" hae asked quietly, her auntie only leaned over and put her hands atop hae's, a grim look on her face

hae had a feeling that the news she was about to receive would be the worst news one could ever hear.

"your mama, she was coming to my house to get some vegetables from my garden like we always do"

hae nodded, her mother and mrs. bae had been friends since they had moved here. hae hadn't been able to thank mrs. bae for being one of the few people to make her mother smile again.

when hae was younger she had spent days and nights at mrs. hae's house and even though she wasn't hae's real aunt, it felt like she was

"so where is she?" hae asked with a shaky voice

mrs. bae sighed, "but she was exhausted and right on my doorstep she..."

hae sat quietly, screaming on inside but outside she didn't even know what to feel. it was like her body had gone numb

"...she fainted and I think she has a really bad head injury. I called the ambulance and they took her so I came to get you so we can go to the hospital together"

hae gripped her aunt's hand even tighter, tears rolling down her cheeks

"i didn't know the leukaemia had gotten this bad" her aunt muttered under her breath

hae froze.

leukaemia?
