magic, magic and more magic

"I don't see the point of this"

"You will in due time"

"in how much time?"

"That depends on you and your ability to focus, now stop with your needless chatter and focus"

It turns out Loki is a tougher teacher than I thought for him to be, we were both sitting in front of a fireplace in the library and he was trying to get me to set a sheet of paper alight. But at this point, I couldn't even get a spark no matter how many times he asked me to focus I simply couldn't. "Loki.." I whined and he huffed in annoyance "I just can't do other magic" I said with a sigh "if you do not try you will not succeed in other magic, but if you focus on what I insisted you focus on then we would not be in this predicament" he said while peering into a book open upon his lap not looking up even once.

He had told me to focus on lighting the paper by closing my eyes and imagining sparks from a match clashing together. Imagining the sparks and their color the detailed noise of the scuffing from the tip of the match stick colliding with the side of the small box starting a flame.

But for the life of me, I could not start the small fire. I huffed again crunching the piece in my hand and tossing it away and Loki sighed "if you give up so easily you will not achieve lighting the piece of paper you just tossed away" he said grumpily. I crossed my arms over my chest and glared at him as we both sat cross-legged away from one another.

This was my third day in Loki teaching me magic that I still can't get right and I had been sneaking out at night to begin meeting him as his days became more preoccupied. It started with me entering his chambers waking him, him leaving to meet with someone or complete another task he had set and Rosie would gather his breakfasts and other meal requests. Loki had grown quite fond of me taking care of Midnight so every so often I would take my leave to the stables and groom him as he would allow no one else to do so.

"I can't do it," I said stubbornly fed up with the needless hours that were getting us nowhere, "very well then we will try a different task, change this rose into a different color," he said, "what rose?" But I was cut off when a swirl of green magic formed in his hand and a red rose appeared.

My eyes widened for a moment at how easily he could conjure the flower and he smirked looking up from his book when he saw my expression. I quickly composed myself clearing my throat and taking the rose by the stem.

I held it and twirled it for a moment before closing my eyes and wishing it be white, my favorite for it held such a delicate feel toward it. They stuck out in the gardens but they were not bland, they had a sense of gentleness a sense of flow to them that made them look almost paintable. Like a stroke of paint could simply change the entire flower itself. They were rare but stunning.

When I peeked an eye open I gasped in shock and Loki sat across from me grinning as my smile widened and a grinned up at Loki with a sense of proudness. "I did it!" I squealed "Look Lokii I changed its color!" I jumped up and spun around the room holding up the now pristine white rose.

"Well done" he said in that all too familiar sleek voice that made me nervous for a reason I could not pinpoint. My heart skipped a beat and that feeling of contentment washed over me again and I breathed in deeply and exhaled not dropping the grin on my features as I twirled the white rose in my fingertips staring at it with pure joy.

"well hurry on you have more to learn and I, to teach" he interrupted my mini moment and I quickly ran back over to the crackling embers and sat to the side of him again ready for another spell. He picked up another book flicking through the pages until coming to one with an image upon it.

"I want you to make this image move" he said and my eyes widened "you what?" I said in disbelief.  He scoffed before placing the book in front of him and with the swish of his hand, the small horse in the picture began to prance around in the green field background. My jaw dropped, the movements were swift and neat as if the horse was really alive and well. A small neigh sounded from the book which only managed to astonish me more, it was as if the image was not an image at all but rather a scene in real life!

I didnt notice him glance up and smirk proudly at his work, "i-i can't do that!" I yelped in disbelief "there's no way I can do that" I uttered. He huffed then flicked to another page one that had two hands clutching what the midgardians called a fire sparkler, or at least I had read about them at one stage. Sometimes we would both come into the library greet each other of course then look for a book that pleased one another.

little did I know, Loki secretly enjoyed my company, finding it much more pleasant for another to occupy the library with him. Especially one that inhabits magic and that can be taught much more than they thought possible.

"You can if you simply set your mind to it" he voiced grumpily clearly fed up with my defiance and lack of confidence in myself. I sighed but asked him how to do it, he explained that I would need to imagine how I thought the image would look if it was in real life, moving and everything. I need not lose any focus on details, so with that, I closed my eyes and thought hard about the image.

How the small crackles sounded from the end of the stick and how it almost looked like a flame but rather sparked and zapped. The golden and orange glow of each crackle and the small smoke particles dusting from the end of the firey sparks. I only opened my eyes when a small ache in my head began to form and I heard small zaps and sparks and opened my eyes to see the picture, in fact, sparkling before my eyes.

"oh, my gods" I whispered to myself as the sparks darted and zapped in the books page. I glanced up to Loki who looked impressed, thank the gods for that. "you are a quick learner, I presume an example and something that links to who you are as a person will help with further skill enhancements" he said and I sighed in content looking at the book for a moment.

"now... how do I put it out?"
