Chapter 42 Trouble, oh trouble move away

'Ow, fuck!'  I woke up and my head felt like it would crack in two.  I looked around, where the hell was I?  I was lying on a couch…in one of the rooms at the club?  What the hell?

I stood up and my stomach turned.  I quickly stumbled out to find the bathroom and barely reached it as I emptied the contents of my stomach into the toilet.  When I had no more to give, I struggled up.  I had to get home, my head seriously was about to crack open.  I found my way to Jeff's office and grabbed my phone out of the pocket of my jacket.  I texted Benny and he texted back that he'd be here in 15 minutes.  I slowly made my way out of the office.  I found an unopened bottle of water behind the bar and cracked it open.  I drank it down slowly as it even hurt my head to drink.  If my mouth wasn't as dry as the desert I wouldn't have bothered.

I sat down on a stool.  What happened, I tried to remember the last thing I did last night, but it was all a blur.  I remembered coming to the club, hanging out with Jeff and some others and then things got fuzzy.  A few minutes later I got a text from Benny, he was here.

I made my way down the stairs and let myself out of the building making sure the door locked behind me.  I winced at the sun just starting to come up and quickly made my way to the car.  Benny would be getting another very large bonus.

Benny handed me a bottle of Tylenol and a bottle of water as soon as I sat down.  "How'd you know?"  He just shrugged his shoulders and started driving.

I closed my eyes and leaned my head back.  I'd call Jeff later and ask him what the hell happened.

"We're here Sir," Benny called from the front seat when I must have dozed off.

"Thanks Benny, expect something extra in your cheque this week," I told him before I opened the door and stepped out.

I nodded to Stefan, the security guard.  "Weren't you here when I left last night?" I asked him.

"Yeah, pulling a double, the other guy was sick.  Hey, did Finn find you last night?" he asked.

"Finn?  He's still in New York."  Stefan looked confused.

"He got back yesterday evening, after you left.  Then later on he went to meet you.  I was in the washroom when he got back early this morning, by the time I got out he was getting into the elevator, but the door closed before I could talk to him."

"What?"  I ran to the elevator and pressed the button.

"Let me know if you need anything Sir," Stefan called out as the door closed and I headed up to the penthouse.  What was going on?  I wanted to scream at how slowly the elevator was going and when it finally got to the top I rushed out, put in the code to the door and burst into the apartment.

"Finn?"  I called as I made my way down the hallway.  I went straight to his room and let out a breath when I saw him lying in his bed.

"Hey baby."  I walked over and cupped his cheek, kissing his forehead.  He didn't stir at all, he must have been exhausted.  Then my eye caught something on the carpet next to the bed, well, some things.  There were pills on the floor.  I looked up and saw the bottle on the night table.   "No!" I screamed when I read what it was.  "Baby, wake up!" I began shaking Finn and slapping his cheeks.  "Wake up baby."  His head flopped from side to side.  Panic filled me, but I had to remain calm for Finn.  I tried again to wake him up and when I couldn't I grabbed my phone and dialed 911.

Everything seemed so surreal.  It was like I was on the outside looking in at the scene.  EMS arrived and immediately started working on him.  The police arrived and started asking me questions.  Benny came running in and started talking to the police and I stood at the foot of the bed watching everything happen in what felt like slow motion.  Soon they were wheeling him out, I started to follow but Benny stopped me and told me he would drive me.  They needed to work on Finn and I would get in the way.  After they left he led me down in the elevator and out to the car.

"Do you want me to call someone Sir?  Ajax?" Benny asked me.

 "I don't know," I told him, "I don't know…"

We weren't too far behind the ambulance, but of course by the time we got into the emergency room, Finn had been wheeled away and they weren't letting me go to him.  Benny was on his cellphone and after a few minutes he brought it over to me.  "It's Ajax Sir, he wants to speak with you."

I took the phone from him.  "Jax…" I whispered.

"Nico, what's happening, why did Finn take sleeping pills?" he shouted.

 "I don't know Jax, I don't know, I came home and he was lying there…I don't know."

"Nico, I'm leaving now, I'll get on the first flight or I'll hire a plane, I'll get there as soon as I can."

"Okay Jax."  I dropped the phone as the call ended.  I think Benny picked it up, but I wasn't sure.

'Get it together Nico,' I told myself.  Now was not the time to fall apart.  I stood up and walked over to the desk.  "I need to know what's happening with Finn Jennings, I'm his guardian," I told the nurse.

She took one look at my face and stood up, "I'll go find out right now Sir, please stay here though."  When I nodded she quickly went through the double doors.  A few minutes later she came out.  "They're still working on him, they pumped his stomach and are running tests.  The doctor said he believes they got most of it, some of the medication has gotten into his system, but his heart rate is fine and he seems to be responding well to treatment, you found him just in time.  The doctor will be out in just a few minutes to talk to you."

I slumped into a chair and felt myself start to shake.  Leaning forward I dropped my face into my hands.  Benny sat next to me.  He was quiet, but just sat there to be with me.

Twenty minutes later a woman came out and the nurse directed her to me.  "Mr. Salazar, I'm Doctor Paulson.  I've been treating Finn."

"How is he?" I asked as I jumped up.

"He'll be fine.   He certainly gave us all a scare, but I don't think he ingested as many of the pills as we originally thought.  Do you know why he took them Mr. Salazar?"

"I don't, not yet.  Can I see him?"

"In just a few minutes, they're moving him to a private room.  He will be sleeping, don't worry, his body is just exhausted and we did give him a sedative.  I know that sounds counterintuitive, but it's a different type than the sleeping pill.  His body has been through a lot and he needs to rest.  I'll have a nurse come get you as soon as he's settled into his room.  I'll also come talk to you more later on as well.  I will be recommending a psychiatric evaluation to rule out suicide."

I started to object, but the words didn't come out.  I really didn't know what was going on or what was going through his head.  I didn't know what happened last night, if he had found me when I was in whatever type of blackout or what he might have seen.  There were too many unanswered questions.

When the nurse brought me to his room and I was alone with him, I broke down as I watched his pale body lying in the bed; he looked so small and innocent, IV lines hooked into his arm, a heart monitor blipping quietly in the corner.  What have I done to this beautiful boy.  What did I do to cause this?
