Sparks Will fly: A Fairy Tale

Here's a story I'm working on please comment!

I stood at the crosswalk, hugging my arms against the cold waiting for the cars to stop. My breath fogged up in front of my face, and I began to seriously regret not bringing a coat with me. The bustling city was gray in the cold light and I began to think I would never be able to cross the street when I saw a boy walking towards me.

And he could have stopped this traffic with his looks. His shining copper hair was shaggy amd framed a masculine square face with warm brown eyes. He was wearing jeans and a sweater and stood calmly waiting with me. I quickly looked away after realizing I had been staring at him for way too long. He smiled down at me wryly.

"It's getting impossible to get anywhere without being stuck behind cars." His voice was deep melody that would have made any lesser girl swoon. But I was solid as a rock

"Um, yeah" I looked down again, not knowing what else to say to him.

"You look freezing can I buy you some hot chocolate or coffee?" When I met his gaze they were filled with concern.

"Uh, yeah that sounds great" He grinned.

"Great" And the cars finally slowed and stopped to let us walk past.

"I'm Dan by the way" he held his hand as we hustled to the other side.

"Melanie, nice to meet you." I grabbed his hand and was shocked to feel its heat and strength. When we reached the sidewalk he gently took my elbow and lead me to a coffee shop nearby by the proclaimed to have "the world's best service.

"Let's see if they have anything good." We walked in and a bell tinkled overhead. It was a cozy little shop with couches around the tables and heavy drapes around the windows. A fire was lit in a grand fireplace on the other side f the room giving it a warm feel. I sighed with happiness as I felt my skin thaw. I immediately went for table closest to the fireplace with two big armchairs. I had nearly forgotten Dan was with me until he held out my chair for me.

"Thanks' i said, startled by his courtesy.

"I believe in keeping chivalry alive" he walked around to his armchair and waved a waitress over.

"So, do you live around here?" Little alarms went off in my head as he said this. Wasn't I taught to never give out that kind of information to a random stranger? so vaguely replied

"Sort of, I was just coming back from the library when I got stuck on that corner. I had been waiting there for fifteen minutes!" My forgotten rage rekindled as I thought about it.

He chuckled, "Yes, this city has a reputation for two things: the cold and the traffic." he looked down at his menu and I did the same. I looked up as a young waitress in a black skirt and white blouse with a name tag declaring her to be Pat.

"What will it be for you two?" She looked towards me with an expectant smile.

"I'll have the jalapeño hot chocolate" I looked to see how Dan would react but he just looked excited by this and he and waitress shared a knowing smile. Okay that's weird.

"I'll have the same" he said.

"Okay then "Pat took our menus and walked away.

"So you like hot stuff?"

"Anything spicy I love. Bland food makes me gag" I shuddered at the thought of my mom's horribly bland pasta. He looked at me in astonishment.

"Same here!"

"Really?" I replied, leaning forward on to my elbows, letting my red curls spill forward.

"Yeah" He said. Pat walked over with our drinks which I quickly grabbed and used to warm my still cold hands.

"Is there anything else I can get you?" she asked. Dan looked at me questioningly and I shook my head.

"No thank you I think we're all good."

"Okay then, wave if you need anything" she gave us one more smile and walked to greet a couple who had just walked in.

I sipped my hot cocoa and was pleased to taste the spicy chocolate. I really started slurping it down then until I heard Dan laughing again. I felt a little self-conscious.

He shook his head, "I've never seen a girl so excited about hot chocolate."

I grinned, "Well I'm one of a kind"

"You most definitely are"
