Pink Haired Triplets - Chapter 4
Promises“Alex!” Cal shouted, running into her friend’s hospital room. “I’m going home today!” She shrieked as loud as she dared. She was excited, but not stupid. She knew Bernie, the nurse who had threatened to rip her vocal cords out and/or legs off on many occasions was on duty, and wouldn’t like it if “she woke up the entire hospital AND the corpses downstairs in the morgue.”
“That’s great!” He exclaimed, a smile across his face. “I’ll miss you though…” Even though it had only been a week since Cal arrived at Northside General Hospital and 6 days since she met Alex, the two had become close friends. Though she hadn’t known him for long, Cal had no qualms about sharing anything and everything with him. He understood her, got what she was going through, and was a funny person. It’s surprising how much quality bonding time can be spent hiding from an angry nurse behind a vending machine.
“Who will keep me company now? Bernie?” Alex joked; no one who had met Bernie would think that that could be a serious question.
“I wouldn’t wish that on any one,” Cal assured him. “But I have to come back for chemo and other junk a lot, so I’ll be back.”
“That’s sure to piss Bernie off,” he commented.
“Then that will be the only reason to come back. Bernie, and you.”
“Bring balloons,” Alex instructed.
“Why?”
“Bernie hates when they pop.”
“Oh yeah,” Cal smiled, remembering the joy they had gotten out of the huge bouquet of balloons brought by one of Cal’s classmates. “It’s amazing how easy it is to accidentally sit on a balloon.”
“Or roll over it in a wheel chair…” Alex added.
“Well I won’t forget the balloons then.” Cal thought about what she had just said, and corrected herself. She knew better than to say she wouldn’t forget. “Actually, I probably will forget… can you text me to remind me?”
“Yeah, sure, if you give me your number.” Alex agreed, pointing out the flaw in her plan.
“Oh, yeah, right. Do you have your phone or paper, or something?” Cal asked, still excited about being discharged.
“Here,” Alex handed Cal his phone. They hadn’t exchanged numbers before this because, well, there was really no need to. They were almost always 5 rooms apart, if they weren’t in the same room.
“Put yours in mine, and I’ll text you when I know for sure what days I’m coming in,” Cal said handing her cell phone to Alex.
“This your brother?” He asked, looking at the screensaver of her phone.
“Yeah, Cameron. I can’t believe you never got to meet him and Cayden! I’ll drag them up here one day when they come to the clinic with me.”
“Okay, but they can’t pop balloons with us…” Alex said sternly.
“Of course not. That’s a Cal and Alex only thing. But Bernie can join us if she wants to; she’s been dying to hang with us.” Cal reassured him.
“Yeah, did she tell you that?” Alex questioned.
“Mm hm.” Cal mumbled as an answer to his question.
‘Speak of the devil.’ Cal thought to herself as the nurse walked down the hall.
“Speak of the devil,” Alex read Cal’s mind, saying the same thing almost immediately after she had thought it.
