The Right Generation

This is the little monologue that I posted on TikTok but this time with a little more story to it. I wanted to also make it slightly longer. (The other person in this story is going to be gender-neutral!)

Adrian had never summoned a god before. What were they thinking? All they wanted were some answers about if their mom was going to survive the surgery. Well, one book leads to an old witch's shop in the back alley of downtown and one ritual leads to another and now they're at a coffee shop waiting to meet with a god.

Their leg bounced nervously as they fiddled with their now-cold latte. "I don't even think I've ever heard of this god. God of timelines?" They thought to themselves. The front doorbell rang as another patron walked through the door. Adrian turned around to see if the patron would resemble a god and deflated when they saw another soccer mom.

"Goddess, actually." A voice calmly stated from behind.

Startled, Adrian turned around to see a woman standing in front of them at the table. She was tall with short blonde hair with silver streaks. She wore a loose-fitting white t-shirt tucked into light jean shorts with clean white high-top converse. She had constellations and stars tattooed all over her arms and she wore round silver and blue sunglasses. They also noticed a necklace of various purple & blue flowers at her neck. "This doesn't look like a deity at all." They thought.

"I'm sorry ma'am. You have the wrong person, I'm actually waiting for someone." Adrian turned around at the sound of the doorbell again.

"So, you aren't Adrian Fenris then?  The one who summoned me for answers about your mother's surgery?" The voice asked. Adrian turned back around, slower this time. The woman sat down in the chair across from them and waved her hand slightly. In front of them appeared a small cup with a hot latte. Adrian's eyes grew as they look around to see if there was anything controlling what just happened.

"One of my aides runs this coffee shop and this place also makes incredible vanilla bean lattes. That's why I like meeting here." She takes a sip from her latte and leans back. "Now Adrian," She pulls her glasses down slightly to reveal her all-white eyes. "What questions do you have for me?" She pushed her sunglasses back upon her face.

Mentally, Adrian was yelling. So this was a goddess they were talking to.

"So, um, Goddess of Timelines, huh?" Adrian mentally kicked themselves. Nice going. Great way to start off a conversation with a deity of literal TIME.

"Yes. I am Seren, the goddess of timelines. I maintain the timelines of human life." She took another sip of her latte.

Adrian scoffed, "Well, I definitely wasn't born in the right generation." They look up to see Seren holding a deadpan look.

"What generation would you have wanted?" She sipped her latte.

"I would have loved the 80's." They replied.

"Ah yes, a political shitstorm and drugs... and Bowie... what a time to be alive." She takes another sip of her latte.

"Well, I think the 50's would be fun too!" Adrian started to get nervous. They really didn't want to upset this goddess before they got answers.

"Racism and milkshakes. You have that here too," She waves her hand nonchalantly and a croissant appears. "Is this really what you summoned me here for?" Seren take a bite out of her croissant.

"No no no that's not why I've asked you to meet with me. I just want to know if my mom is going to survive this surgery. It's a life saving procedure but there's a lot of risks and I just wanted to know if she'll make it. But I've also always felt like I don't belong, that's all. Since I'm meeting with the goddess of timelines, I just thought I could kill two birds with one stone." They rambled. Adrian felt like shrinking down into nothing in front of this goddess.

Seren could tell that this human was hiding something very painful underneath the cliche generation joke. It was the pain & fear of isolation she had seen in every human.

"Listen to me." She brought their eyes back to her. "You were born at the exact right time. Think about it! You were placed on earth at the exact right time, at the exact right moment, all for a purpose. You may not have found that purpose, but it's there. I wouldn't have placed you in your timeline if you weren't meant to do something great. You are so special to the universe. The potential that you have is there but you just haven't unlocked it yet. I know for a fact that you are going to be fantastic. We are placed in this existence, in this realm, for a certain reason. So take this time for what you will right now. You're doing just fine. I know that it may not feel like that all the time but in my book," Seren pats a green hardcover book with gold designs. "You're doing just fine. So... yes. You were born in the right generation."

Adrian didn't even realize they were even crying until a tear fell on their hand. It felt like Seren had lifted the biggest burden they have ever felt off their shoulders. After months of taking care of their mom and working to pay bills and medical expenses, to hear someone say they were doing good was the most peace they had ever felt.

Before Adrian could say anything, Seren's book started to glow on the table.

"Really?" She muttered. "I'm gone for 20 minutes and they can't seem to handle one simple task of regulating the World Cup?" She looked up at Adrian. "Duty calls. Anything else?"

Adrian thought long and hard. "Does she make it?"

Seren softly smile and puts her two hands on Adrian's hand.

"Yes. She does."

With that, Seren disappeared and Adrian open up their hand and saw a small object.

It was single, white daisy.

(Bonus points if you can tell me what the meaning of a daisy is :) )
When I released Seren, I had a lot of people telling me that "tHeY wErE bOrN iN thE WrONg geNeRatIoN" or how they just feel like they didn't belong, which really broke my heart. I still feel that from time to time. Like no matter how hard I try, I don't feel like I'm doing anything good. And then I just get that one source of outside, unbiased approval and it's the most incredible thing I've heard in months. It's okay to feel stuck. It's normal.

You're going to be just fine.
