I listened closely, tracking the sound of footsteps traveling across the floor above while also keeping an ear open to the boys' muffled voices. Sometimes, if they were close enough to a vent or the basement door, I could make out a few words they were saying. Above all, their footsteps were the most important, though. They told me where they were, where they were headed. Before, I was too panicked to notice them, but now that I've come to grips with where I am and what will happen if I do not escape, I've become very aware of everything going on in the house.
I had tried to remember the layout of Ethan's place: the living room, the kitchen, the bedroom, but mainly, the front door. Though I had the key in my hand, it was useless without a plan. Who's to say I'd have the chance to escape again if I screw up? Ethan and Liam would tighten their hold on me. I can't let that happen, so I had to wait until I was sure I had a clear shot. I didn't want to wait too long, though. Those two are too unpredictable, and I know I'm not safe here. At any moment, they can come in and do something to me. I didn't want to feel those touches again. I would make them pay for doing this to me. I would succeed.
Luckily, I happened to hear them briefly mention work. It was perfect! The house would be empty, since they work together. I just hoped they would leave soon. I was drenched with sweat, my body riddled with anxiety I had never known before, and I hoped I'd never have to feel again once I got out of here. Thankfully, it doesn't seem like they'll be down here to see me anytime soon— At least, I hope that to be the case, after what Liam told me after they had brought me breakfast earlier. He said that since Ethan had gotten ahead of himself and took up my time alone last night that they decided to give me time to adjust today. Adjust! Could you believe that?! HA!
I grit my teeth at the memory. Not a single shred of humanity, nor a care in the world about me. How could they ever think of me as a friend? That's right, they didn't. I'm a toy to them, something to poke at and laugh at. I'm nothing. My heart pulled as I lowered my head, breath hitching with a sob. I hated myself just as much as I hated them for believing that any of what we had was real. Why did I have to ignore all the obvious signs? Why did I think I was any kind of exception?I must be as stupid as they say I am. I shook my head before these thoughts could swallow me whole.
None of it matters anymore. I have more pressing problems to deal with. My self-hatred and pain could come second. Once I get out of here, I'll get them arrested, and then, I'll never have to lay eyes on those horrible bastards ever again. I have to focus. Listen for the front door, listen for their footsteps, listen for their voices. That's all I should be concerning myself with right now. My eyes widened when I finally heard it, the light thumps moving past the basement door towards the front of the house. Bingo. I sit up, begging under my breath for this to go right as my trembling worsened.
