C A S S I E

We sat on top of a fence that was stopping people from falling into the lake a few meters down, eating out sandwiches while Amy ranted to me about that chick Pauline. Amy seemed to really think that we messed up and Pauline would do something about it and people would believe her. But come on, really? It would make no sense at all.
"It's gonna happen! I know it! We are fucked!" Amy angrily crumpled up her trash. I finished chewing the last bite of my food.
"Amy." I looked over at her frustrated form. "Nothing is gonna happen. We are okay." I wrapped an arm around her smiling. She grabbed my trash and hopped off the fence, throwing it in the waste bin a few feet away. I looked down at the water. It looked so refreshing and welcoming. She hopped back onto the fence and fixed her ruffled blond hair.
"Hey, Amy?" I asked still looking down at the water, pondering for a moment.
"Yeah?" She asked. I could see her turn to me in the corner of my eye.
"What if I just jumped in?" I asked and pointed to the water.
"Uh, you'd get wet?" She chuckled confused on the nonsense coming out of my mouth. I looked over at her.

"No, seriously. Could we do that?" I asked. "Yeah...but-"She started. I excitedly hopped on the opposite side of the fence, nearly scaring Amy half to death.
"Let's do it." She looked down at me baffled. I hopped up and down a bit with puppy dog eyes.
"Ok, but you're insane." She shook her head and carefully climbed over to where I was. I pulled off my shirt.
"Aren't I?" She laughed and pulled hers off as well, leaving us both in our bras and shorts. We hid our phones and purses under our shirt.
"Ready?" I asked. She nodded, we gripped hands.
"Jump!" I yelled as we both closed our eyes and leaped off the edge. She let out a small scream as we fell through the air for only a second, letting go of each other's hand. I took a quick breath as we hit the water.

Coldness surrounded us as we were submerged under a foot of water. My cheeks were puffed out with air, so were Amy's. We both popped up to the surface laughing. I moved my hair from my face as we tread water. I swam over to the wall we jumped off of and into swam into a small shallow crevice in the wall. Amy followed me confused as I sat down on the ground, water waist length. She sat beside me.
"Did you know this was here?" She asked and looked around the little cave we were in.
"Yeah, I used to play here when I was a kid, with my sister," I told her, remembering the old times.
"You have a sister?" She asked baffled. I shifted uncomfortably.
"Uh....had...." I bit my lip and looked away. "Oh god....I-I...I'm sorry, I didn't mean...t-to....Cassie I." Amy stuttered before pulling me into a hug. I laughed halfheartedly.
"It's ok Amz, happened when I was twelve." I shrugged and ran my hand overtop of the smooth water.
"If you don't mind me asking....But, what happened?" She asked and looked at me concerned. "A fire, whole family, gone..." I felt tears threaten to flow.
"Cassie I'm~" I cut her off.

"Y'know it wasn't an accident either." I snapped, A switch had flicked on in my mind, anger burned through me. "My uncle wanted revenge. Something my dad did years ago. Set the house on fire. And when I came home...." I broke down into choked sobs but continued.
"Of course I wasn't home! That one day! That one fucking day...." I trailed off again. Amy tried to place a soothing hand on my shoulder but I pushed her off.
"I got forced through the foster system. So many fucking times. Family after family. None of them could just keep me for a full year." Amy could do nothing but listen, tears slipping down her cheeks as well.
"I got fed up and ran away, the only job I was able to get was at that fucking strip club. They were desperate, so they took me in at sixteen." I thought back to my first day.
"I was their janitor for the first year and waitress the second. I met May the first day, I became her apprentice." I was staring down at the water, just watching the slow waves hit my stomach.

"Four years...I was there for four fucking years. I stopped caring and took this job, I've given up on my life at twenty-three I'm a fucking failure...." I felt more tears run down my cheeks.
"Cassie your not-" I cut Amy off again and looked into her dark sadden eyes.
"Yes, I am! I failed at saving my family just like a fail at doing everything else. The only thing I'm good at is lap dances and sex." I started to get angry again.
"I don't even know why I'm still here! I might as well be dead. There is nothing going for me, I mean come on. Even we are pretending like I don't exist!" I stared at the deep water ahead of me. I could swim out, and just sink. Sink deep down as I watch the world blacken out away from me. I could just end this... I could be with my family again. My sister....I could see her, I wouldn't have to remember her screams that haunt me every night. That's when I remembered the nightmare I had a few nights back. It was the fire, my sister, being pulled in.... I want to go home.

Amy was shaking me with tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Cassie! Cassie snap out of it! Baby, please! You're scaring me! Makenna!" That name snapped me out of it. That name, how did she know that name?!
"How do you know that name?!" I snapped. She gasped, surprised by my suddenness.
"Y-You repeated it to yourself w-when you zoned out...." She shakily told me.
"You shouldn't know that name!" I slightly shouted at her.
"C-Can you at least tell me who she is...?" She quietly asked. I looked over at her.
"She's me..."
