After an hour of trying to go to sleep, I gave up. There was just too much on my mind, and I wanted to talk to somebody. I needed to spend my last night with my best friend.

I got up and crept towards Brooke's room. I opened the door quietly and saw her lying down with her eyes open.

"Hey," I said quietly.

"Hi," she said, looking at me. "Can't sleep either?"

"Even if I could, I wouldn't. Way too much going on to even try to sleep," I said.

She rolled over and patted the spot next to her. I laid down next to her so our arms were touching, and we were laying on our backs, staring at the ceiling.

I inhaled deeply through my nose and let it out through my mouth. "How'd our lives get so messed up, Bree?"

"I have no idea, Hayl," she said, using the nickname I only let her use. I don't even let Liam call me that.

"It used to be easy. Remember that time when I ask Tristan for money and he gave it to me and left me alone?"

Brooke laughed slightly. "Yeah, I remember that. You wanted to paint the house, but we didn't have enough money, so you blackmailed him into giving us some. What'd you say, again?"

"I had found photos of him in a mullet and a speedo and said I'd post them on the internet if he didn't hand the money over. At least, I think that's what it was."

"How long ago was this again?"

"Last year."

Brooke laughed. "We did a lot of things before that. Didn't you mow the yard but made it say 'Hayley Rocks'?"

I laughed as I remembered that. "You bet I did. And didn't Liam cut the bushes so it said 'All The Ladies Luv Liam'?"

Brooke laughed again. "You still remember that?"

"Of course! It was the best thing ever!"

"It was, like, eight years ago."

"It was great craftsmanship for a nine year old."

Brooke laughed again. "What else did we do when we were kids?"

"Well, we had a water balloon slip and slide; performed a musical, which sucked by the way-"

"Hey, I was the singer! It was the best!" she protested.

"-set the kitchen on fire," I continued, giggling. "And much, much more."

"And all that was before we found out we were werewolves."

"Yes it was. I like to think it was my inner wolf inspiring me to do those things before it showed."

Brooke laughed. "Man, how old were we when we found out we were werewolves?"

"Twelve. I remember Liam thinking he was gonna go all Wolverine and be a cross between a man and a wolf, not transform into a full-fledged wolf."

"Oh yeah! We wouldn't stop teasing him about it for months. And he thought we had to shift every full moon and hunt down people who lived in villages and eat girls with red cloaks."

"Yeah. What was wrong with him?"

"I have no idea, but I will admitt, I thought we had to terrorize villages as well. That's what all the stories said."

"Yeah, now we just terrorize the people who helped create us."

We laughed again.

"Man, how old were we when we first shifted?" she asked.
