(Question) ❝I have a question! How can you calm an autistic person if they're having a meltdown?❞
Not every person with autsim has the same calming method when having a meltdown. When I am having a meltdown, I do not want to be touched, I just want something to hold onto. I always bring my stuffed penguin everywhere I go, and incase I have a meltdown, I have something to comfort and protect me. Sometimes, I need to be distracted from hurting myself. When I am in a meltdown, sometimes, I end up hitting, biting, or scratching myself. When people are not calm with me, it makes me feel a lot worse. What calms me down is a blanket, a plushie, and a calm person, and an empty and quiet area. If I am talked to calmly and quietly, which works rarely, I CAN slowly calm down, and if I have my noise reducing earbuds, I might be okay.
But, here are my methods. Be calm, be loving and empathetic. Do not touch them. Give them a plushie, and distract them from the meltdown, along with noise reducing headphones or earbuds. And, bring them to a quiet and empty place.
