Stefani stayed standing still on the spot. Her arms folded. Feeling emotionally naked. She waited for him to speak first. Mostly because she had no idea how to start any sentence right now.
"I uh.. do you want to sit?" He asked. She just nodded, sitting down on the sofa. As he followed. Keeping his distance as he sat of course.
"I don't really know what to say." He admitted. On the way over, he had his whole thing planned out. But now being here. Sat right in front of her, alone for the first time since it happened. He felt vulnerable and sad. He couldn't remember a word of what he had planned.
"You're the one who came here to talk." She pointed out.
He nodded. He knew that, obviously. He sighed, running his hands through his face. "Look we need to pull our shit together if we want this movie to be the best it possibly can be." He kept calm, staring at his hands, resting on his knees.
She agreed. Of course they had to. They couldn't have every day be the way that today went. They had to sort everything out. If not for themselves, then for Ally and Jack.
"I know."
He noticed how she looked uncertain. As if debating with herself what to say next, or to even say anything at all. She wouldn't look at him. He understood that part. It hurt.
"I'm sorry for the way I acted earlier." He said quietly. "But, you have to understand I'm angry." He didn't sound angry. She knew that wasn't the right word he could have used. But she understood what he meant. He was broken. And his voice, and expression told that without trying.
"I know." She nodded. Neither of them were ones to be short of words. But in this situation, they most definitely were.
"Do you think we can be friends?" The uncertainty in his quiet voice ripped her heart into a million pieces. She felt awful that she was the reason for all his pain.
"Of course." She breathed out. Meaning it. He was her best friend first.
"I miss you so much." Something about seeing the strong, confident man she knew, be so vulnerable and open, made her feelings even stronger. He was everything she yearned for. And everything she couldn't have.
"I miss you too." She returned with the same tone as his. Her throat burning as she continued to hold back her emotions. Not wanting to break down in front of him, because that would make it worse for both of them.
He never experienced this situation before. Or the feelings that came with it. He felt like she could see right through him. He was breaking in front of her, his vulnerability taking over him. She looked away as her eyes teared up. He noticed.
"Can you just kiss me once more." Not caring how weak or fragile it sounded. Because he missed her in every way. Especially that way.
"We can't." She whispered. Her hand returned to her cheek, trying its best to keep it dry.
"Please Stef." He looked at her. His eyes watering. Full of love, but also full of pain. She thought she was going to burst into tears. This was the least she could do. A goodbye kiss, she told herself. As she placed her hand on his cheek. Swiping her thumb across to wipe his tears. Pulling his lips to hers. Both sighing as they felt the familiar touch once again. This wasn't a good idea. She knew that. But truth be told, she wanted this as much as he did, if not even more, she told herself.
