January –Alex

Christina was crying into my shoulder, “I can’t believe I’m pregnant.  I’m not ready for this.  We used protection how could this happen?”

“Chris I’m here for you.  It will be okay.  We eventually wanted children so this happened a little sooner, we’ll adjust.”

“This is so going to affect my career.  What am I going to do?” Chris continued to cry.

“Look on the bright side, we’ll be young when our kids go to college,” I said trying to cheer her up.

“You always find something to be cheerful about, Alex and I really appreciate that, but sometimes a girl just has to vent.  I don’t want to be cheery about this.  I need to get this out of my system so I can have a good pregnancy.”

“I understand.  What can I do to help?”

“Nothing.  Just let me vent and cry on your shoulder.”

“In that case, carry on,” I said as I rubbed my hand up and down her back trying my best to sooth her.

March – Alex

“Hello,” I say into the phone.

“Hi Amar bhaiya, it’s Kavita.”

“Hi Kavita! It’s so good to hear from you.  How are you? Better yet, how’s my brother treating you?”

“I’m good and Arjun is also doing great and so far so good,” Kavita responds laughing.

“Good, because if he gives you a hard time you know you can count on me to straighten him out,” I respond teasing her back.

“I’ll keep that in mind.  I was actually calling because I’d really like to have you and Chris over for Diwali.  I know it’s early in the year and Diwali isn’t until the fall, but I know Christina has a busy schedule and she’s a planner, so I wanted to get on your calendar before it filled up.  It would be really nice to celebrate our first Diwali in our new home with family.”

“Kavita, that is so sweet and thoughtful of you and any other year I would definitely pen it into our schedule, but I don’t think we’ll be able to come this year.  I don’t think we’ll be travelling at all this fall or winter.”

“Oh, why is that?” Kavita asked trying to mask her disappoint.

“Because you’re going to be a cha chi! We’re due at the end of September.  I was going to call you and tell you, but I was waiting for us to get through the first twelve weeks.  It’s week eleven so I think we’re close enough,” I say bubbling over with excitement.

“Oh my God, Amar that’s wonderful news! Okay in that case you are excused from traveling for Diwali this year.  At first, I thought I was too late and you’d already planned some other vacation this fall, but looks like you have even a better plan.  I’m so excited for you! Hopefully, we can come visit you and meet our new niece or nephew!”

“Kavita that would be wonderful! You’re the first person I’ve told, so please act surprised when you hear it from my mom.  She’ll kill me if she finds out I told you first.  But, it feels so good to share this news with someone.  I’m going to be a dad, Kavita, you know a dad.”

“Congratulations Amar.  You’re going to make a wonderful dad.  I’m so happy for you both.  How is Christina feeling? Is the pregnancy good so far?”

“So far it’s good and she’s been doing well.  I kind of wish she’d slow down some, but you know Chris she powers through long hours at work and then comes home and collapses.  But luckily, everything is normal and she hasn’t had any unusual symptoms.”
