Chapter V- Free Bird

I have been drilled, trained, tested and pushed so much over the past three months that I was about to rip my own head off. I had learned everything from demons to angels and backward to forward. I was ready to go on my first hunting trip, and Bobby had found a small town in Georgia that sounded like the perfect job for a new hunter like me. 2 deaths over the past week and they both looked like suicide. I was leaving tomorrow.

Something about the past few months had changed me in a big way. The pain from my parent's death started to fade away, and it was replaced with anger. I had turned some what sour during my training, and I think Bobby has noticed. He started avoiding me more often when I really started to warm up to my new life. Even though Bobby was now like a father to me, I knew there was only so much of my new attitude he could handle. How to handle a bitchy, pissed off girl probably wasn't in any of those books of his.

I sat down at the kitchen table with Bobby as he ate some lunch. I didn't cook as often as I used to, but when I did I knew Bobby appreciated it.

"Are you all ready for tomorow?" Bobby asked in between bites of chicken. I nodded, and slumped down in my chair.

"How many miles do I have to drive?" I ask.

"A lot. It all comes with being a hunter, sweet heart." Bobby says, pointing his fork at me and I groan. "That credit card I gave you is strictly for the necessities. Don't go on any shopping sprees, alright? I don't want the credit company calling me and asking why I'm in Georgia spending a bunch of money on bras." He jokes and finished off his chicken. He gets up and washes his plate in the sink. I was suddenly struck with a question I had to ask.

"Where are the Winchester boys?" I asked, sitting up. Bobby turns and looks at me with a smile.

"On a hunting trip. Somewhere in Florida." He says and I frown. I hadn't seen Sam or Dean since that morning that Dean had woken Sam up. Or, the night I had slept next to Sam. I still didn't know much about them, but from what Bobby told me they had crazy lives. I was kind of jealous of them. At least they had each other. I was stuck with me, myself and I. Well... I had Bobby, but it's not like he would go hunting with me. He had responsibilities here.

I laid in bed, too anxious to fall asleep just yet. I kept scolding myself, saying how I was going to be so tired for my long drive if I didn't fall asleep now. I tossed and turned and finally I gave up. I laid on my back with my eyes glued to the ceiling. I kept making images up in my mind of what I maybe up against in Georgia. I imagined me killing it and what kind of weapon I would have to use. Eventually I drifted off to sleep, only to have a dream about what my first hunt would be like.

I wake with a startle the next morning, my alarm making me jump out of my skin. I quickly react and hit the 'off' button. I sit up and quickly shower. My clothes were already set and ready. Everything was packed in my car and all I had to do was say goodbye to Bobby and eat breakfast. I jump out of the shower and get dressed, excited to start the day. I walk out of my room and over to the kitchen. I decided I would just eat cereal, so I got out my lucky charms and poured the milk in. I look over and see Bobby standing in the doorway staring at me.

"Hey, Bobby." I say, leaning my back against the counter with a bowl of cereal in my hand. Bobby nods at me and walks over to get himself some cereal.

"Layla, are you sure you're ready to do this?" Bobby asks and I nod.

"Bobby, I'm so ready, you don't even know." I say and Bobby laughs.

"I bet you are, kiddo." He smiles over at me, looking away and staring into the distance for a while.

"Bobby, are you alright?" I ask and he shakes his head.

"I'm alright, it's just going to be weird without you around." He confesses and I smile.

"I'll be back before you know it. Besides, I bet some time alone will be nice." I say, finishing my breakfast and putting it in the sink. Bobby nods in agreement as I grab my cell phone and keys off the table. Bobby walks with me out to my car. I open the door, and turn to give Bobby a bear hug.

"You better be careful, you hear me?" He says, hugging me tightly back.

"I hear you." I say, getting a little teary eyed. I turn to get into the car, when Bobby gives me something.

"What's this?" I ask, and look at the ring he'd placed in my hand.

"A little something. It's good luck." He says as I stare at the beautiful green gem in the middle of a golden ring. I can't help but be reminded of Dean's beautiful eyes. I hug Bobby again, then slide into my car. I drive a little ways, then open my window to wave goodbye.

"See you later!" I call to him, and he waves a hand at me. I turn the corner off of his road and roll up the window, then breath in a fresh breath of air. I felt so free, but I was scared. I was excited and worried all at the same time. I was so thankful for Bobby, there weren't even words. I turned on the radio as usual, hoping it will help pass the time on this long road trip.
