I stepped into the hospital room and immediately flinched. Nevaeh was unconscious, tubes going into her body through IV, a bandage wrapped around her head, looking so, so small. The blankets wrapped around her seemed to be swallowing her, making her seem tinier than usual.
Luckily, I noticed that her chest was rising and falling at a steady pace, and she seemed to be peacefully asleep.
A nurse was in the room, checking some charts and monitors.
"How long has she been asleep?"
His gaze found mine, "About four hours."
I nodded, "Do you know when she'll wake up?"
"Soon," He answered, "the anesthesia should be wearing off soon. She will be groggily though, from all the pain meds and other drugs." He gave me a kind smile and I glanced at the badge with his name. His name was Kyle. He was relatively young and had light blonde hair. His scrubs were white with small dinosaurs on them.
"I really like your scrubs," I said, pulling a chair to Nevaeh bed. I sat down and took her hand into mine.
Kyle smiled, "Thank you. Since this is the pediatric wing, we usually wear more silly clothing to make the little ones feel more comfortable." He looked at me with a raised eyebrow. There was a twinkle in his eye. "Girlfriend?"
I blushed, "No... Well, I wish."
He chuckled. Gathering his charts, he made his way towards the door. "Don't worry, kiddo. You'll get a chance at it." He winked playfully, "I'm one of the official nurses assigned to Miss Anderson, so I figure we'll be seeing each other frequently. I'll be back to check on her in about an hour.
He left, leaving the room quiet. Besides the hum of the machines around the bed, and I sat in silence. I had no idea what to say.
"Nevaeh..." I started, "If you die, I'll kill myself, find you, and then drag you back here." Trying to keep my tone light, I closed my eyes. I remembered my dad telling me that comatose patients could sometimes hear what was going on.
The humorous words died on my tongue, however. I was too stressed to joke around. "I'm serious. You are so young, and you have your whole life ahead of you." He opened my eyes and squeezed her hand lightly. "Please fight."
When there was no response, an awkward feeling came over me. The silence was weird. "Whether or not you can hear me, I guess I should talk or something." I rubbed the back of my neck, "We have a soccer game in a few days."
"It's against Pleasanton, our all-time rivals, and it's a home game, so we really have to win. If we do, we'll move on to semi-finals. Also, there will be some college scouts there. I gotta work hard to make sure they have a chance of seeing something in me."
I smiled, "You know, the other day, Arianna was asking about you. She really likes you. Another thing that's going on is that Alyssa's having problems with her English teacher, and she's been kinda moody lately. I don't really know what to do, and I've been trying to cheer her up. It's not working that well, but I hope it'll get better."
I chuckled, "Sorry, for, uh, ranting out all my problems, by the way. I tend to ramble when I'm stressed, and boy am I stressed right now. Well, anyway, I'm glad you're listening..." Wincing, I bit my lip, "Not listening, but just being here? Well, no, I'm not happy you're in a hospital, but I'm happy you're... nevermind, I'm sure you get the point.
I huffed, feeling silly. I'd never talked to someone who was sleeping in a hospital bed, unconscious. It felt like one of those clique scenes in movies.
"So, um, yeah. Gosh, sorry I'm acting so strange. Okay, shit, uh I can tell you a story if you want?" I nodded, a story was a good idea. "Okay, so once upon a time, there was a girl named—wait, you've probably heard little red riding hood. I'm sorry, I don't really have any good stories. I only know those ridiculously cheesy fairytales I used to tell my sisters."
I pulled out my phone, "Lemme search up a story... one second." I quickly pulled up chrome and searched 'Stories' and sighed. "Do you like scary ones? I shouldn't tell you a scary one, I don't want to scare you if you are listening. Funny? Yeah, I'll tell you a funny one." I read through one of them, "Wait—no, this isn't even funny! Ugh, okay, scary story it is." I shook my head, muttering: "Jesus, Adrian, get a freaking grip."
I heard a snort from the bed and turned my head slightly. Nevaeh's eyes were open, though she still looked tired, and she was smiling sleepily. "You suck at this."
I let go of her hand, which I was still holding, and enveloped her in a hug before I could stop myself. She was surprised but eased into it. "Nevaeh..."
Relief surged through me. "God, I was so scared." We released each other, but I kept my position on her bed. We were facing each other, and she gave me a watery smile.
"Me too," she murmured. Grabbing my hand and squeezing it, she gave me a tentative smile. "No matter how much you suck at talking to sleeping people," an amused expression graced her features, "Thank you for being here. I appreciate it."
A yawn escaped her lips and she closed her eyes for a second. I rubbed my thumb over her hand and smiled. "No problem Nev. You deserve it."
She cracked a sleepy smile. "Nev?"
"All your friends call you Nev, remember?"
She nodded slightly, eyes still closed. It was clear she was fighting to stay awake. "Glad to have you as a friend, Adrian."
I laughed, "All my friends call me 'Rian."
She hummed drowsily, "'Rian has a nice ring to it."
"Doesn't it?" I kissed her forehead. "Get some rest, Nev. I'll be right here when you wake up."
ugh. the chemistry. writing nev and rian has left me a gooey mess.
