Yeosang - Not Alone

Kylie sighed to herself as soon as she walked in the house. She could smell it already.

Her father was in the garage smoking weed, probably with a beer in his hand.

He acted like he could hide it from her, always sneaking around and keeping to himself. But she knew. She had known for a long time.

She made her way to the kitchen and started to make dinner, knowing he would come in on his own eventually. Food was too tempting for him, especially when he was high.

When she was about halfway done, there was a light knock on the front door. She wiped her hands on her apron and hurried to answer it.

"Hi baby." She said with a bright smile.

"Hey. Am I too late?"

"Not at all. I'm so glad you're here." Kylie leaned forward to give her boyfriend a light kiss.

She and Yeosang had been dating for over two years now. They saw each other almost every day after they were both off work, and she was crazy about him.

He followed her into the kitchen and took a seat at the island, watching her cook with a small smile on his face. "You look cute in an apron."

Kylie blushed and muttered a quick thanks before scooping out a little of the sauce she was making and offering it to Yeosang. He let her feed him, then brought his hand up to hover over his mouth. "It's delicious!"

"Great! It's a new recipe I wanted to..."

The garage door opened and they both turned to see Kylie's father walk in, his overly round beer gut protruding from the bottom of his shirt. He was also sporting shorts that barely passed for more than boxers.

"Hi Daddy." Kylie said, trying to keep her voice calm.

"Hi Sweetheart. Hey Yeosang. I didn't know you were coming over today." He held out his hand and shook Yeosang's, a wide, friendly smile on his face.

"I told you yesterday, Dad."

"Oh, ok. Well how have things been?" He dad leaned against the counter and crossed his arms.

"Good, just busy with work and school. Nothing too exciting." Yeosang said, shooting him a quick smile. "Thank you for having me over."

"Oh it's no problem. I'm going to go shower. How long until dinner is ready?"

"Probably about 15 minutes." Kylie said, glancing over her shoulder.

Her dad nodded then shuffled out of the room.

Kylie sighed to herself and kept stirring the sauce. It wasn't like her dad was a bad man. He was actually really caring when he wanted to be, but he refused to take care of himself. After having a heart attack a year ago, Kylie had hoped that he would change his ways... Drinking every day, smoking, snacking all through the night, and he did for a few months. But then he went back to work. And it started all over again.

He was forgetful, spacy, and could be mean or rude with his words when he drank. He had never, ever been abusive, but he got into this zone where he thought he was being funny, but his words hurt more than anything.

It had caused her mom to divorce him. She packed everything up and left one day.

"Are you ok?" Yeosang asked quietly, coming up behind her to wrap his arms around her waist and rest his head on her shoulder.

Kylie just hummed and nodded her head. She was used to it.

They made friendly conversation during dinner, her dad seemed to be in a better place tonight. Until something was said and he ended up calling Yeosang and asshole before laughing afterward. He was the only one who found it funny.

Kylie had to hide her shaking hands under the table, where Yeosang reached out to grab them. Neither made eye contact with her dad and all conversation died.

He didn't seem to really care. As soon as he was done, he went outside to grab another beer, then settled down in his armchair in front of the TV, turning on science show.

"I'm sorry." Kylie said as she started washing dishes.

Yeosang was quiet for a long moment, but then he came to stand next to her and helped her clean the kitchen. She knew he was upset but was doing his best to brush it off.

They retreated up to her room when they were done and Yeosang pulled out a new shooter game he had bought, smiling brightly and wiggling it back and forth.

"Oh, you are so going down!" Kylie said, grabbing her remote and sitting on her bed while he got the game powered up.

She was wrong, of course. Yeosang played games every second he could spare and had been for years. But that didn't stop her from trying to mess him up by grabbing at his remote.

"Cheater!" He called out when she finally managed to knock it out of his hands. He retaliated by jumping on her, pinning her to the bed and tickling her sides.

Kylie bit her lip, trying to hold in her laughs, but he was relentless. She was soon a squirming mess beneath him. "Y-Yeos-sang! S-Stop! I g-give up!" She forced out through her laughs.

He smirked at her and sat back, crossing his arms. Then his face softened and he looked at the clock on the wall. "I should probably get going."

"Do you have to?" Kylie looked up at him.

"What about your dad?"

She scoffed. "He'd never know. I'm sure he's passed out in that chair of his. And if we get up before him we can say you just came over early. But I honestly don't care what he thinks." Her voice got quiet and she picked at her comforter.

"Ok, I'll stay." He said, reaching out to take her hand.

"Thank you. I'll go find you some clothes."

"No need." He winked at her and walked out of her room.

She followed him and saw him walk to his car. He came back in carrying a bag and Kylie just shook her head and rolled her eyes before motioning for him to go upstairs. When she heard her door close, she walked over to her dad and shook his leg.

"Dad." He snored, his mouth open wide. "Dad." She shook him harder. He just snored louder. "Dad!"

He let out something that sounded like a snort and a snore and opened his eyes, looking around like he didn't know where he was.

"You should go to bed." Kylie said before walking upstairs to her room.

Yeosang was already situated in the bad, sitting up against her headboard and looking at something on his phone. He smiled warmly at her and patted the bed.

Kylie quickly ducked into her bathroom to change and get ready for bed before she joined him. He switched off the lamp and pulled her to him, wrapping his arms around her.

"Thank you for staying." She whispered into his chest.

"You're welcome." He pressed a few kisses to the top of her head. "Kylie?"

"Yes, Baby?"

"Why do you stay?"

Kylie felt a lump form in her throat and she clutched his shirt. She asked herself that question all the time. "Because he's my dad..." She heard Yeosang sigh, then nod his head. "Because, despite everything he's put my family through, I can't just abandon him. It terrifies me when I think about what would happen to him if I wasn't here to take care of him. He used to be a good dad, always making time for me, taking me places for our Daddy/Daughter days. I don't know what changed in him... And I'm so mad at him sometimes. But... I just can't bring myself to hate him."

Yeosang squeezed her tighter. "You've got such a caring nature, Kylie. It's what made me fall for you. But you need to take care of yourself too."

"I know, Baby. And I'm doing the best I can."

"If you're going to take care of your dad, then as much as I don't like him at times, I promise I will always be by your side and take care of you." His voice was so soft and soothing.

Kylie nuzzled his chest with her nose. "I love you, Yeosang."

"I love you too. Always and forever. You're not alone."
