Jack was startled awake to the sound of an air horn. He jumped and fell off the couch, hitting his head on the coffee table. His hands went to cover where he hit his head.
"Gosh dam it Blake! Why are you waking me up now!?" he yelled.
"Happy birthday Jack!" he said, getting out a bunch of confetti and throwing it over Jack.
Jack stood up and looked at the clock. "7 in the morning. You woke me up an hour early just to tell me happy birthday?"
"Well, yeah. That's what friends do." he smiled slightly. "Besides, I made breakfast." he walked over to the kitchen and started making himself some sausage biscuits and gravy. Jack stood up, walked over and started making himself some breakfast. They sat down at the table and started eating.
"I don't care if you'll like this or not, but I'm setting up a birthday party for you. Tonight when you get back after school."
Jack stared at him. "Why would you do that? You know I'm introverted and don't like parties."
"You seemed fine at the prom in our senior year."
"That was because I actually had someone to dance with who would make sure I didn't have to talk to anyone."
"Still, you're going to do fine. I invited them, along with some of your old friends, some of your college friends, and...Leah..." Blake got quiet after saying her name. He looked down at his food. They stayed silent for the rest of the meal.
Finally, Jack got up and grabbed some fresh clothes. "I'm gonna go change. Be out in a bit," he said as he went into the bathroom to change. When he came out, he started getting his things ready for classes
"You need a ride?" Blake asked.
"No. I'll call a friend and see if they can bring me," Jack replied, remembering the embarrassment of all his friends seeing him climb out of Blake's old blue Ford Gremlin and the sound it made as Blake drove off...Jack cringed and did his best to delete that memory, but it wouldn't go away. He sighed and continued packing his things. He slung his backpack over his shoulder and walked to the door.
"Bye Blake. See you later."
"Bye then Jack."
Jack walked out the door, pulling his phone out of his pocket to call a friend.
