Fourteen

We are on the road. We're thirty minutes into the drive and so far, it's not so bad. Obviously within a few minutes or hours, they're all going to be complaining about the drive and asking questions like 'are we there are', 'when are we going to get there', 'how much longer', etc.

"If you guys don't shut up, I will pull this car over and give you all a spanking. Now shut the hell up!" David playfully yells. Everyone laughs at him, some even talking back to him.

"David. It's fucking 3:30 in the morning!" Zane yells.

"We'll get there when we get there." David says. "Go to sleep. We'll get there faster." He adds.

"Can we at least pull over? I'm starving and I have to pee." Josh complains.

"Fine." David rolls his eyes and drives off the next exit. We drive half a mile down from the highway and we pull into a gas station with a McDonald's. David parks the car and everyone climbs out. Jason and Trisha pull up and they look at us all as if we were all stupid.

"I thought we weren't stopping for nothing." Jason asks.

"The kids were complaining." David shrugs as everyone walks into McDonald's.

"We were hungry!" Josh yells, mimicking a child's irritated voice.

"You were hungry, Josh." I corrected him. He flips me off and walks inside.

"Want anything, babe?" Jason asks Trisha.

"Why not." She sighs and they both climb out and walk inside. I look at David and he gives me a smile.

"Are you hungry?" He asks me. I take a deep breath and shake my head.

"No." I softly say. He nods his head and looks around. He nods his head again and looks back at me as if settling on a decision in his mind.

"C'mon. Let's go on a walk." He says. We walk away from the gas station and walked around the grassy-dirt area. The gas station was in the middle of nowhere but if we drove a couple miles down more, there would be more buildings, maybe a small town or city.

"Are you excited for this trip? I hope I wasn't bugging and pushing it." He says.

"Why would you think you were pushing?" I lightly chuckle.

"You're spending a lot of time with me and my friends." He says.

"Oh. Yeah. You really are pushing it, David. What if I wasn't up to spend so much time with you?" I joked.

"Hilarious. But I'm serious. About my friends." He says. I made us stop walking and I look at him with my brows furrowed down.

"Why does it matter so much?" I question him. "They're great, David. I really enjoy spending time with your friends." I say. He softly smiles and nods his head.

"I just...I don't know." He shuts down. He shoves his hands in his pockets and looks me in the eyes.

"It's just hard for me." He says.

"What is?" I ask him.

"My ex-"

"Yo, David! Get something to eat so we can go!" Zane yells. Instead of David finishing what he was going to say, he nods his head at me and he walks away. I wondered what he going to say. I followed him anyways and we ordered something to eat, but nothing too heavy. I settled on some french fries and a coke and David gets a whole meal. Obviously he couldn't resist.

We were back on the road after spending almost thirty minutes deciding what snacks we were all wanting from the gas station. David made sure to keep plastic bags in the car to collect all the trash. Instead of him driving this time, he wanted to get a little nap before we stopped again and switched back to driving. Josh was now driving so it was two people in the front, two people in the back and three in the very back. Zane was passed out asleep next to David, who sat in the middle and I sat by the window. Basically, everyone was asleep except for David and I. It was quiet and we kinda liked it like that.
