Chapter 4

I wake up to my phone ringing. I look at the clock and see that it's only 3 in the morning. I look at the caller ID and it says, Augustus Waters. I pick up the phone and answer the call.

"Hello?" I ask with a yawn.

"Hi Hazel Grace. I have just finished An Imperial Affliction. And I thought it was amazing. But why did it stop in the middle of a sentence? Are you missing a few pages? What happened to the characters? Please don't tell me Anna's mom marries the French tulip man." Augustus says. I sigh.

"I'm not missing any pages. I don't know what happens to them. But I do know that Anna dies right? But I don't know what happens to Anna's mom and the French tulip man. I hope they don't get married." I say tiredly.

"Yeah Anna dies, sad to say. But, when is the sequel coming out?" Augustus asks.

"I have no idea.........Gus you do realize that it's 3 o'clock in the morning right?" I yawn. All I hear is silence.

"Gus?" I ask. More silence.

"Augustus are you alright?" I ask.

"Huh? Oh yeah I'm fine. I'll let you go back to sleep if you want." Augustus says sadly. I can tell he won't be getting much sleep and is lonely so I decide that I can last for a little while.

"I'll talk for a while if you want." I say.

"Okay." Augustus says.

"Okay." I reply. I smile. There's a nice silence that lasts for a while.

"Maybe 'okay' can be our always. You know Isaac? He has a girlfriend named Monica and they say always to each other meaning they will always love each other." Gus says. I smile more.

"Okay." I say.

"You do realize that I'm asking you out right Hazel Grace?" Augustus asks. Oh. I'm not ready to go straight into that yet.

"Um. Maybe for right now. Okay can be our way of saying, 'are you alright?', for a while." I say. Silence.

"Okay." Augustus says after a long pause.

"Okay." I reply.

"Stop flirting with me god!" He laughs. I smile.

"Okay." I say. I can just see his sexy half smile.

"I'll see you tomorrow Hazel Grace. Okay?" Augustus asks.

"Okay, Augustus. Goodnight." I say.

"Goodnight." He replies. There's silence on the phone letting me know that he hasn't hung up yet. I smile and just feel safe in the silence that connects our phones. I like going to this third world with him. Sitting in silence with the comfort of his breathing.

"Okay." Augustus whispers.

"Okay." I whisper back. He hangs up. I put my phone back on my nightstand and go back to sleep. I dream about that third space that I want to revisit with Augustus again.
