My Steps to Self-Acceptance, from an Undocumented Immigrant.

Step 1, recognizing:
It was like a confrontation,
With my undocumentation,
Which was previously hidden,
And to speak of much forbidden.

Step 2, understanding:
Realizing I'm not as equal,
Instead perceived as illegal,
Though in every other aspect,
American with all respect.

Step 3, coping:
Accepting I am different,
But to others belligerent,
Though my journey may be harder,
I need not white's social armor.

Step 4, blossoming:
I am proud to be latina,
My status no me defina,
Nonetheless perseveraré,
Amor propio aceptaré.
