__________________________________Damn..... I just missed the A train again. I could hear the wheels screeching underground as I bounded down the two flights of cement steps. My timberland boots thumped huskily against them, as I dragged my feet against the ground, stopping in front of the grafetti covered token machine.
I knew I should have taken that token Darnell had tried to give me earlier. I was known to be a shoulda, woulda, coulda type nigga on occasion. I fed my money in and waited for the clank of tokens as they fell from the machine. I nodded my head to the Arrested Development album bumping out of my headphones and pounded my fist against the machine, until it released the coins. Shit, I had mad places to be.
I counted them to make sure all ten had fell down because this particular machine liked to gyp me on the regular. I ignored the hustle and bustle of people walking past me and went about my business. I loved the chaos of living in New York City. I liked the feeling of belonging to something so large, but I also liked the feeling of being able to disappear into nothingness. Everyone had their own story & minded their business, that's the way it should be.
I tossed my hood over my head and started to drop my token in the turnstile, when I looked up & saw an angel from above. A'ight, maybe she wasn't a real angel, but she was a beauty. She brushed past me rudely, bumping into me as I moved out of her way. She seemed to be walking past me in slow motion. Her wild, dark, curly hair bounced behind her as she sashayed, her cocoa skin seemed to glow under the dull fluorescent lights and her long legs were accented by the leather snakeskin boots that inched up her thick thighs.
I grabbed her hand as she walked past & she turned her head towards me abruptly, like she was about to tell me off or something. I took my hoodie off & smiled down at her, kissing the back of her hand and she smirked back, wiping it on the side of her silver puffer jacket. " Aren't you a little too fine to be trying to pick up women at the subway station?" She asked as she headed for the steps.
"I was just tryna tell you that you bumped into me shawty, I'm waiting on an apology." I quickly looked at the train schedule, the next one was coming in 30 minutes, Fuck that, I'd get there faster walking.
"Nigga... you also could of gotten out of my way and I wouldn't have bumped you" she sassed, as I fell in step beside her. I shook my head, shawty was too much. " Look Miss..."
"Renee" She cut me off and sent me a smile, her eyes glinting mischievously. "Renee, hmm.. I like that. I've never met a Renee before. I'm Garfield, like the cat. You mind if I walk with you?" I asked as we exited the subway and stood in the middle of the crowded sidewalk. " If you think you can keep up...Garfield, like the cat." I liked how she said my name.
There was something remotely seductive about Renee that drew me to her, I just couldn't figure out what it was yet. I licked my lips a little and started walking, pulling a cigarette out of my jacket pocket. "A'ight shawty bet..." I replied tucking it between my lips as I lit it.
Renee looked over at me and took the lit cigarette from between my lips. She took a small drag & tossed it on the ground, stomping it out with her heel. I looked at her in disbelief, "You owe me a cigarette Renee."
"G, I'm saving your life, be grateful. If you hanging with me, cigarettes are no más" she said as she checked her watch, picking up her pace a little. "But you just took a drag—-... You know what nevermind." I said laughing awkwardly, as we stopped at the crosswalk at the corner of 18th & Martin.
