For the first time in many moons, the sky was clear. Stars twinkled faintly above the trees and no moon shone on the snow. Now is the time.

The cat pricked his ears and slowly roused from his nest. Beside him lay two dark shapes, unmoving and asleep. Huh! They have no idea.

His whiskers twitched, and slowly the cat placed one paw after another and moved forward. Something soft brushed under him. Suddenly one of the sleeping shapes let out a faint squeak. Startled, the cat jumped away, his eyes flashed with fear. Mouse dung!

The cat was breathing hard, heart thumping against his chest, but he took a deep breath and lowered his head, and emerged outside. Nothing, stands in my way now.

He held his head back in a smirk, triumph flickering in his eyes. I am free. A faint outline of his body could be seen, and his pelt seemed silver in the dim starlight.

It was Thornpaw.
