"Nisa... Do you think... Maybe... It's possible that... You're... Pregnant, too?"
My jaw dropped as the words left her mouth. Me... PREGNANT?!? "Uhm... No... Why?" I asked, my eyebrows knitted together in confusion.
"Uhm..." She responds, glancing at Andy, who quickly looks down. Then I get it. He was talking about this morning. To be honest, I don't think it's possible, what they're talking about. But... It's plausible... And I don't want it to be. I'm only 16! I can't dael with a baby! "Alexa's 17..." A little voice in the back of my mind says. I know it's childish, but I almost wanted to tell the voice this was different. But it wasn't.
"It's your turn, Lexi," I said calmly, changing the topic and petting Zoey, who curled up in my lap. Alexa looked at me strangely before standing up to bowl. Once she's gone, Andy looked at me and opened his mouth to speak, "Nisa..." He said, his voice hesitant and quiet. I sighed, not because I'm mad at him, and I don't want him to think I am. I get off te hard plastic seat I had been sitting on, and moved onto his lap, curling against his chest. He wrapped his arms around me, placing his chin at the crown of my head.
"I'm not ready," I whispered, the back of my throat tightening as my eyes pricked with tears.
He held me tighter, his voice gentle, "It's too early to get hyped up. I'm sorry I said anything. But..." He paused, so I lifted my head to meet his gaze, his ice blue eyes holding my gaze. "But what?" I asked, my voice trembling, afraid of the worst. Andy leaned his forehead against mine and met my eyes, his gaze full of adoration, "Even if it's true, you have to know, I'd never leave you. I swear to you I won't. This won't tear us apart. I won't allow it." His voice stayed even, it was deep and comforting as ever. I pressed my face against his chest, two tears dripping from my eyes.
"I love you," I mumbled against him, and he kissed the top of my head.
"I love you too," he told me. And I knew he meant it. A small smile lit my face and I know that I... We can do this. That is, if it's even a possibility.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Later that day ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was after the bowling alley, and let me tell you! THAT was uncomfortable! And I never thought I'd say that about my closest friends, but it WAS! There were tears... And just... It was awkward. Not something I like witnessing. It seemed a bit... Private... Anyways! Not to get off subject.
I promised Alexa a kitty, so we were getting one! She wanted to get one from the pound, said she couldn't stand those commercials showing all the poor little animals that needed help. And in all honesty, I felt the same way. Right now, though, we were at the small gas station near the shelter. We needed gas, and Alexa wanted some Doritos. I was waiting for her to get out here. What could be taking so long? Finally, though, I saw her pink-haired self bounce out the door with a bag of Doritos and a Dr. Pepper in her hands.
"Okay!" She said once she'd made it back to the car, "Now I wanna get my kitty!" She climbed into the car. I chuckled and started it, driving to the shelter.
When we got there, the lady at the counter pointed in the direction of the cats. I started to smile at the look on Alexa's face. She must really love her kitties. Almost immediately, though, one caught her eyes and she hurried over to the cage, cooing over the little animal trapped inside. I followed her and saw it was a tiny black kitten with one white paw. Her eyes were a deep green that popped against her dark coat.
"She's perfect," I said, and Alexa turned to me, nodding excitedly.
"She's adorable!! I want her!!" Alexa was bouncing in place. So of course, we got her. The lady told us our little kitty's story as we filled out the adoption papers. "This little girl," she said, patting the kitty in Alexa's arms, "was in a litter of 3 that was abandoned by their mother. SOmeone called our offices and we collected them. Her siblings, though, were too feral to be adopted and unfortunately had to be put down. But this little girl is very sweet and won't give you many troubles." The woman finished, and I noticed Alexa's lip sticking out in sadness from the fate of the other kitties.
When the adoption papers were all situated, we left to get the necessities for a cat. Walking into the pet store, I was completely lost. I had NO CLUE what to get for cats. I've never had one! But that's why Alexa was here. She knew. But I guess it wasn't as hard as I thought it was.
"We need some kitten food, and some toys! And a litter box! And a collar!!" She started calling out things we needed. So we started at the collar and leash aisle. My eyes widened slightly. A pink and black Hello Kitty collar caught my eye. "Look!!!!" I held up the small piece of leather for Alexa to see. Her mouth fell open as she grinned. "I love it!" She grabbed the collar from my hands and fit it around the kitten's neck.
"It's perfect!" I said, scratching the still unnamed kitty's ears. She purred and butted her head against my hand. We continued to walk around the store for about 30 minutes, getting things to spoil our tiny black kitten.
"What do you want to name her?" I asked when we got back in the car.
"Hmm... How about... Nightmare?!" She asked excitedly.
I nodded, "That's perfect! She's our perfect little nightmare." The poor cat looked exhausted and had her head curled under her paw, asleep.
Maybe Nightmares aren't all bad...
