"Fine," Luxis raised his hand and light emerged from his palm. His small, yet tidy and organized bedroom was lit up with his human-flashlight, then he went to his mother in the living room.

"You know you are really helpful. Thank you." Alice smiled seeing his illuminated son walked out of his room. Even with his black hair falling down to his eyes, she can still see how green his eyes were and how sharp his jawline was.

"Your welcome mom, but have we paid our bills this month?" he asked.

"We already paid it! What do you think of me, an irresponsible citizen of Adanak?" She shouted, rhetorically. Luxis looked at her mom's thin figure sitting on the couch, slightly highlighted by the light from his hand. He was expecting a follow-up answer. Alice then snapped her fingers and covered her mouth with her free hand as the other held a book he can't make up because of the darkness. "Pickled shoot! It was the last month that I paid and forgot this month!" Luxis smirked, thinking that this has already happened a lot of times. "Why did I forget it! Now we have to suffer from no power until they'll reconnect it again and that will take up to five days!" His mother ranted while he walked towards the kitchen searching for the cabinet, faintly hearing the closing of a book from his mother's grasp.

"Mom, you're always forgetful." He corrected as he pulled out a big flashlight from their storage.

"Oh, am I always like this?", she shouted over. None will ever believe that Alice, being only 37 for her age, was a retired lawyer and was the best on her profession during her reign. She had become a successful lawyer and had been looked up by many; thanks to her vis which she can memorize everything that she landed her eyes on.

"Yes," Luxis handed over the flashlight to his mother. "I gotta go to bed mom, entrance exam's tomorrow."

"Oh really, and what school was that you are trying to apply again?" She opened the flashlight and Luxis closed his palm to extinguish his own.

"See. You forgot again." He threw himself on the other side of the couch where his mother was sitting. "Uhm... Queentus University, mom." He said with a touch of hesitation in his voice. He waited for his mom's reaction.

The couch let out a soft squeak as Alice moved closer to him. "My son...Don't you think there are other careers that you can pursue than being a hero?"

Luxis let out a heavy sigh, "some encouragements?"

"Luxis, this a prestigious hero school that we are talking and the passing rate is always below 1%."

Then, the whole place, mostly dark to start, was now silent with only the sounds of few cars passing the streets outside their house. The light coming from the flashlight and the streetlights penetrating through their window barely illuminated the room. Luxis was trying to hold back his tears when he looked at his mother. The light embraced Alice's long, dark hair. Her eyes, as dark as the night, were filled with sadness but as she turned to her son, it was then filled with concern.

Luxis, seeing that his mother was going to face him, turned to his hands with fingers intertwined to each other. He thought that his mother doesn't even know how much strength he has to muster to even try applying to that school. He does not have the confidence and conviction that Alice have as she climbed up to the top of her profession.

Luxis only have his dream.

"Luxis, every single time that I watched heroes save people, I am always amazed by them; however, most of the time time, they risk their lives to be on the front line. These people always have this perspective that sacrificing themselves to save every citizen is an honor." He heard his mother's words shaking as she continued, "I can't imagine my son doing those dangerous things." Alice then began to cry. She cupped her hands to her face and words gurgled out through her fingers. "My heart is going to explode just thinking of it, Luxis."
