The thefts and kidnappings were dismissed at first, but quickly escalated to the point where they became unavoidable. First, a few trees and bushes disappeared, then an entire shed full of tools. Reports of missing livestock were followed by the disappearance of a hitchhiker on route 404. An entire house was just gone overnight.
As fear gripped the region, the culprits made a public apology. Nobody expected aliens. "We are sorry for your discomfort, but we're anthropologists. We have calculated that the Earth will become uninhabitable within fifty years. Don't worry, we'll remember you," they said, as they flew away.
