When did things go so wrong? What happened to normal robbers? What happened to saving people? What happened to not seeing them taken to a hospital after not failing to save them?
It had been Nicole's fault, for sure. If she had been paying attention to the girl and not trying to help Spider-Man fight against the thieves, then maybe, just maybe the girl would be fine. Nicole was on her knees on some random, empty rooftop. Her hood, which had been knocked off, leaving her dark hair flying behind her back. She closed her eyes, trying to shake away the sight of the girl's bleeding leg but it wasn't working. Nicole sat back, leaning against the small brick railing of the roof. She could still hear the girl's scream in her head.
"Oh god, oh god," She rocked back and forth, trying to calm herself. But she couldn't. The winds around her were agitated, as though sensing her mood and connecting with it. "Calm down."
But it wasn't working. The world around her was blurring into unintelligible shapes. Nicole could barely make out what was in front of her. She pushed off her mask, taking deep breaths through her mouth and nose, trying to calm her racing heartbeat. But it wasn't working either. A sob escaped her mouth and before long she was crying hard. Tears were falling from her face and she didn't know how to stop them.
Nicole didn't even hear Peter land on the rooftop; neither did she hear the worry in his voice. "Nic..oh god..w-what happened?"
"Th-That girl," Nicole said amidst sobs. "She shouldn't have been hurt. I should have protected her. Why couldn't I protect her, Peter? Why?! She shouldn't be in the hospital right now! She should be at home with her family! It's my fault...it's my fault..."
"Oh Nicole," Peter crouched on his knees, looking at Nicole with a lot of concern. He had never seen like her. Out of all of their friends, Nicole was probably the strongest and the most confident. To see her in this state was breaking his heart. He didn't know what to do. He shakily put his arms on her shoulders to steady her.
As soon as Peter did so, she threw herself into his chest and continued crying. Peter slowly wrapped his arms around the girl, hugging her. Nicole knew the main thing about crying was that you couldn't keep it up forever. Eventually, her sobs became soft noises, her tears lessened to two or three drops. Her breathing became less jerky and...finally she was quiet. She stayed in Peter's hold for a while, letting his warmth spread through her body.
After a few more moments, Nicole pulled away. "I'm sorry."
"What?" Peter gave her a look of surprise. "You have nothing to say sorry for, Nic. You tried your best to save that girl. If you weren't there, I'm sure she would have been injured even worse. You did your best and I'm sure the girl must be grateful."
"Peter," Nicole looked down at her hands. "I...this hero thing is really a lot, you know. I don't know how I'm going to do it. Heck, I don't know how you did it. It really worries me."
