It has been ninety-nine years since the Colony War ended. Since we defeated the armadas of the Allied Solar Forces and declared ourselves a sovereign and independent world. We shut our gate and lived in the quiet, knowing that someday they would return. A slow and distant reckoning was coming for us across the stellar void.

I'm a radio astronomer, and yesterday I caught the first two transmissions. One was a message of peace, the other a declaration of war. I sit, rereading them both, and question which to believe. I am paralyzed under the weight of the future.
