"You must listen to me love" said the woman. Hardly twenty years of age she lay on hear deathbed, her hair spread out behind her like the midnight sky and her breathing ragged. Her skin was a strange shade, almost translucent. She lay shivering on her bed despite the many blankets layered on her.

His face streaked was streaked with tears as he watched his mother die. "You must listen to me Jace," she said, her voice more urgent. "They did this to me. They bit me and drank my blood. You must promise me that you will never go after them, especially at night. That's when they're at their strongest. Promise me."

By her side, the boy let out a sob, an array of emotions filling his heart. He looked at her and let his emotions take control. "Farewell my child," were the last words she said before she closed her eyes forever. The boy sobbed uncontrollably now, hunched over the body of his moth. He repeated the same word over and over again, chanting it like some sort of mantra. "No...No...No..."

He could feel anger coursing through his blood, making it boil. He clenched and unclenched his fists as an unknown feeling rose to the surface. It was unlike anything he had ever felt before and he didn't know what to do about it. It made every part of his body feel as if it were on fire. He curled up on the floor and whimpered, whispering "what's happening to me..." He screamed all of a sudden as he felt his spine curve. He was in pain and he didn't know what to do about it. He could feel his fingers extending and his nails curving in as he lay there. He screamed in agony as he felt his nose grow longer, into a muzzle and as his teeth extended.

Within minutes, Jace's transformation was complete. In place of a young boy lay a wolf with fur as black as the night. He whimpered as he stood up and looked around. Everything was sharper and he could hear every little sound that had been previously mute to him. He whimpered again, softly, before letting out a howl that pierced the quiet night.
