"Because we are alive. And now... we are FREE!" Markus yelled to the crowds of Androids below us, who returned with an almost deafening cheer. I was thrilled; everything we had worked for since we woke up had finally payed off.
In that moment I wished Markus hadn't persuaded me to stand up front; I really wanted to cheer along with the others. But North, Josh, Markus, Connor and I had to stand in front of everyone, and none of them were cheering. Also... I felt like I didn't belong up there. Markus was our leader, the one who gave us hope, the one who gave us freedom. There was not one member of Jericho who didn't know him. Connor was awesome, he freed thousands of our people. He also had an extremely interesting personality- I got to speak with him on several occasions. Josh was smart, peaceful and a perfect example of morality. North was strong and brave, and would make a great leader. And then there was me, a coward who thought that Jericho would never succeed. I'm such a disappointment. If it weren't for Markus we would have just stayed down there until we eventually-
My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a gun shooting. I spun around to see Markus drop the his knees, a bullet hole through his head and blue blood over the floor. I froze, shocked. Above him stood Connor, gun in hand, an emotionless expression on his face. A second later, the faint sound of a helicopter came from above us. Shit.
"EVERYBODY, HIDE!" I yelled to the crowd. North was fighting Connor in the corner. She grabbed his wrist, flipping him over and onto his back. Connor didn't even react; he simply grabbed her ankle and switched positions with her. As I was running towards them to help her, Connor grabbed the gun and pulled the trigger at her head in one swift movement. My mouth hung open slightly; I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Knowing I could do nothing to fight him, I ran over to Josh, who was helping our people evacuate. I grabbed a YK500 called June and pulled her towards me. I would so one thing right; I would save her.
"Stay close to me." I instructed, grabbing a gun. A few humans ran over to us, confident that they would kill us. But they hadn't seen the gun. I pushed June behind a metal board, pulling the trigger. Nothing. They laughed, pointing their guns at me. I closed my eyes. I didn't want to die. I wanted to live. I wanted to live so, so badly.
"Please. Please, I don't want to die. Please."
I closed my eyes, just before a shot sounded.
A/N: I was originally going to wait until May to upload this book, but I have decided I am just going to upload one chapter a week. Chapter one is now up, and new chapters will come every Sunday.
